This is where I’m at. As much as I’ve not really cared for a lot of his later stuff (and I genuinely do keep trying lol) there was a point around SBTH where I was genuinely worried about him. The fact he’s with us still and getting to do his victory lap is good enough for me.

I think the hate comes from a lot of things. The Kanye stuff already mentioned, his personality on social media, and most of all the way he’s pandering hard to the rage sound at the expense (subjectively) of what made his music special to begin with.

It’s the path he’s chosen, though. He could’ve dropped MOTMIII, coasted on a down the middle AKNC re-release, maybe toured a bit, and sat back to enjoy the residuals, but he’s still hungry. Power to him for that, even if Flex and the new single are… definitely not my taste lol.

I know there are a lot of old head Cudi fans (my first PFP on here back in 2011 was a pic of Cudi I took seeing him on the Cud Life tour after MOTMII) who see it the same as me. I’m not about to be pushing 30 bumping Flex, but kids who were the age I was in his prime sure will. And good for him and them.

Yep absolutely. It’s funny, at 29 I’m realizing these arcs have happened with a lot of the artists I grew up with. I had a similar path of understanding with Fall Out Boy and Coldplay, both of whom I was as big of fans of as Cudi and have come to accept that their newer stuff isn’t for me - but there are kids out there who are loving it just the same.

On the other hand, FOB (mainly Pete) more so than Coldplay, there’s always the somber side of “at least they lived to become old and corny”. Linkin Park, Mac, SOPHIE… what I wouldn’t give to get to watch them grow old and have this arc rather than the reality.

I don’t hate Cudi on any level as a person, but he makes himself an easy target with some of the ways he carries himself and some of the actions he takes.
That doesn’t make it right, of course, but it’s the Internet and people are gonna go in on you if they feel you “deserve it” for some reason; or even just if they can somehow justify it in their head.
