Idk but he while he is right - RD was also independent during creation and it's first one or two years, and only had a physical limited distribution deal with a major, so it didn't have much wide release for like two years. Illmatic was also slow moving its first year too then blew up major in its second, while it took RD to really catch after Vol. 1 but was considered a cult underground classic.
But it's always been said Jay was the "2nd choice" after Biggie and Pac - and Pac was def coming for Jays neck from some mysterious beef prior they have on like 94 and even called RD weak on a track that got from 7Day Theory.
Biggie would be bigger than Jay, and Jay is one of the few ppl 2Pac was not trying to reconcile with. So he would have been overshadowed by Big, and smothered by Pac. Then you had DMX just around the corner.
The only thing that might have saved Jay to having some kind of resemblance that we know him as is if The Commission by Biggie who planned to do a group with Jay Z, Cam'Ron and Charlie Baltimore after Life After Death and Vol. 1 happens, but Jay could have easily just became "Bigs mans" with a way smaller footprint especially with how Big was gonna do a label that would have had ppl that would end up on Roc later such as CamRon. And of course 2Pac was trying to end Big, Diddy and Jay so you would still have to deal with that even as The Commission.
One of my fav what ifs and timeline shifts in Rap music tho. S*** is super interesting with so many possibilities.

Is there a way I can learn about this
Is there a way I can learn about this
Which part?
Most of the stuff I talk about on this site are mainly from a lot, like a lot a lot of vids n interviews (especially in the 2010s I was a video fiend) and part of it is from my family lil connect in Rap + my a bit of my own research online n w ppl
The parts of The Commission is talked about a lot on YT nowadays u can Google or YouTube it easy
The 2Pac beef with Jay Z is still a mystery, Jay Z won't talk about it he says out of respect for Jay Z being dead and Pacs homies say the same today and that Jay Z peaced it up with them in the 2000s - there are a few rumors but nothing concrete, one of the public rumors is that Jay Z was around Big when Quad Shooting happened and 2Pac saw him as an enemy - something I personally heard is that 2Pac with how he went around to the South and East underground circles n how he met ppl like Scarface, master p, buckshot, trench of naughty by nature etc. that he met Jay Z in one of those underground circles in like 93/94 and they didn't like each other and it's been on since. It could be a combo of the two, maybe with the little bad blood of Pac and Jay, Pac really said f*** it after Quad studio shooting since Jay was one of Bigs closes mans and it's whispered online Jay was around Big like the night before or sum s*** before it happened.
Here's the lyrics, from the outro:
"Don’t you love how I stick it to ya? (Got that little s*** off my chest, you know I mean) (Jay-Z you big d*** suckin' lip havin' ass)
How I do it to ya (Shit was all on my chest, know I mean)
Don't ya love how I do?! Nigga we love soldiers, Hahahahaha
Hahaha ya'll gettin' weight? (Listening to niggas albums and I keep hearing some funny s*** like tryna me
Niggas
I don' smacked ya'll niggas up in like 3 months and I still went (Drop a hit, drop a hit) 5 times platinum this year (I drop bombs, nigga) and ya'll niggas ain’t even f***in’ makin' no noise
(I know you know who the f*** I’m talkin’ about, trick ass nigga)
Ay, Jay-Z, straight up your album is weak, homeboy
You too f***in’ small in the f***in' weight scale to f*** with me
(Cause I said your motherfuckin’ name, that’s how you know I’m talkin’ to you, punk motherfucker, come get me)
You ain't even on the charts good enough to be f***in' with me, you weak motherfucker (Come get me) (Shut the f*** up) (Come get me)
Hawaiian Sophie lookin' ass motherfucker (Come get me)"

Then the info of Camron knowing Big is more common knowledge now, Camron has also talked about it in depth on his Sport talk show and also his own music talk show.
This was like a pilot episode of Lebron’s The Shop before it was on HBO.
I think they scrubbed most of it once they made that deal but this Future clip spread

Imagining a timeline where Jay-Z is lyrical french Montana is crazy

You mean to tell me a rapper who dropped their debut only 3 & 9 months before Tupac & Biggie died wasn't as big as them at the time?
I'm stunned, how did he discover this forbidden knowledge?

LMAO that's a wild way to put it but could have def been true
Imagine having the two biggest Rappers ever swallowing you (with 2Pac being thee literal biggest of all time at the time), Biggie automatically kills your career lane and 2Pac wants to literally kill you - You CANT WIN!
Them two dying, God bless the dead, is literally God potentially giving the biggest gift to Jay Z and like damn near any entertainer ever lmao - no wonder he feels so preordained and God givin'

That's not what he meant
He means RD wasn't popping it's first few years (which is why he also compares it to Illmatic debut reception which was received, although ppl forget Illmatic had a slow debut year sales wise and didn't pop off with sales till it's 2nd year) which is true, but it wasn't really because it sucked it was mainly cuz of their label situation so I think the retrospective skewing is a bit unfair
But it is overall true, it was an underground cult classic and considered a hidden gem for years - it also didn't go plat till 2002, and was giving attention mainstream wise when jay blew up with vol. 1 or vol. 2
Even Jay admits this and says part of Vol 1 strategy was to make it mainstream and radio focused that would attract better label situations
