That dead pisses me off though we be so quick to say the south run hip hop but never wanna embrace it as a whole so much talent unheard/appreciated because of bias there’s no south without Mississippi southern hip hop wouldn’t have gotten this far without the influence of all its parts so folks are hypocritical and just supporting in bad faith at this point just say Atlanta, Memphis or Carolina because either way even if that’s not ur intentions there’s a whole realm of talent that’s being discredited for the impact they left on the south and niggas careers were jeopardized because of that. Atlanta is not the sum of the south as a whole just like New York isn’t representative of the east coast as whole. That mindset is not different than these out of touch ass white label execs hitting up rappers they think are from the streets to give them an accurate description of the whole “black experience” plus u gonna look weird for shaming another black man for being “country” like how the f*** we gonna enforce classism within our own community lmaoo Acting like tom dubois with a hip hop Twitter account
the latter.
Always thought KRIT was the better producer of the 2 of em.
Definitely. J Cole also had more people working on his beats as he got older. KRIT stayed producing solo and got better over time

Big KRIT keeping that real southern rap alive tbh. So good

It’s all real southern rap when they’re genuine about where they’re from and embracing culture, the roots already been instilled

I think the thing about the south as a whole is that because of our reputation for party music (which...we are of course, but that's not all we are) if we don't fit into that mold (not taking away their talent but Meg, Migos, Thugger, Future for example) then we don't blow. JID and Earthgang type niggas don't get the same shine that the "turn up" rappers from Atlanta. It's mad niggas from Texas that while they have their respect they never got that 'mainstream' success that they most definitely deserved (shoutout to Z-Ro and Devin The Dude) because they weren't just "booty shake" rappers. Which is fine, I love that too.
We're just also more than that.

U got it right on the money the industry already has the preconceived idea of what the south should sound like based on what breaks through at the moment and what’s easier to commodify after even down to culture to an extent. I feel like we barely scratched the surface too with how much the south is represented as whole even beyond hip hop just music in general a lot of legacy was stolen and given credit to ones who aren’t the originators. Back on the hip hop before the south even got the big radio push it deserved folks don’t know that the sound evolving for years all rooted in spirit of home but split throughout different cities giving them an identity of their own and those individual sounds were innovated within becoming broader entity in itself I can’t say there was a true originator because they come from the same root of influence but they branches were utilized in ways that was personal to their spaces. Atlanta is a great example of this because with the south being so open musically you didn’t really have to seek anywhere else to Gather the pieces in order to find ya identity as an artist the influences are intertwined but broad enough to venture as far as you want in your sound. That’s why it may be jarring to some folks to hear earthgang jid and thugger on the same song together but they don’t know that they all share the same influences and came up together they just used the versatility that’s prominent overall in the south and went. Their own directions with it but it makes sense to the people who are familiar with the sound it blends well because it’s on the same spectrum just one side is represented more than the other these days. U mention the gods Z-ro and devin the dude, thing is with Zro is that one of his biggest songs is a feat with jeezy one from Texas the other from Atlanta while both sides adopted their own styles they borrow from the same place so of course that song was going to be amazing. I people in awe knowing that future found his footing in music through dungeon family only due to the fact that his was remotely related to Kast and Goodie mob not knowing he was originally rapping like them some what before grew into the future we know today but it all comes from the same place. In order to fully appreciate what the south has accomplished in music in general you have to acknowledge the culmination of styles, cultures, sounds, etc that makes it so unique today everybody is an alien there so it doesn’t make sense to alienate a specific part of its body as if summarizes the entire identity. Especially within the community where niggas is Ostracized enough
K.R.I.T. to me is the biggest example of why the "big 3" era was so detrimental to hip hop as a whole.
Cause I always thought that as far as singing, rapping, content, flow, that K.R.I.T. was always just better than Cole. Cole is great but like...The Vent, Lions and Lambs, Kings Blues, and Bury Me In Gold? Krit just an alien bruh.
I think the difference is that Cole was at the right place at the right time (and you can argue had 'more appeal') and was given WAAAAY more grace after his flop of a debut versus K.R.I.T.'s flop of a debut (It always felt like after Live from The Underground, which the label f***ed up, he never could shake that 'stench' away. Even though both Cadillactica and 4Eva is a Mighty Long Time are both perfect albums, the latter being a top 5 rap album of last decade) and it just always was one of the biggest stains of the big 3 era to me that KRIT couldn't get his deserved shine.
And that s*** just ain't fair especially for his discography (Return of 4Eva is still the best mixtape of the 2010s.)
You're so right about 4EIAMLT and Return of 4Eva
I havent peeped Cadillactica in a minute tho

real
cole album produced by krit. krits the more versatile producer he can do some super soulful southern style beats, than do some pop the truck type stuff then do some boom bap style production.
We need KRIT back..but like old KRIT..his most recent work has been alright. That 12 for 12 went hard though.

I think KRIT is just not as accessible as Cole, and he pretty much accepted that he's going to stay underground. I do agree he's very talented and deserves more fame.
Ig krit produced by cole? didn't even know krit Produced but it's probably some country ass beats
KRIT produced all his early s***. He's legit.

Boondocks really has an effect on the culture like that
Interesting.
Which gap is bigger?
The production between the two or their rapping/song making abilities?
I think Krit is a better producer . Cole is decent but his beats always have a glaring flaw imo
I think Krit sounds more at home on his own production , and Cole verses usually feel hungrier on other people’s production. the complete J Cole experience (him rapping on his own beats) doesn’t engage me like that so I guess song making is the biggest gap
