Drake is the biggest artist in the world. When you can fart on the mic and make a Way 2 sexy and still have it be a hit, that’s how you know you’re levels ahead of anyone else

Every post 2011 RnB singer and even some rappers take from Abel in some way.

Look at their number ones side by side and tell me Drake has a better collection.

Comparing masterpieces like Starboy to “hits” like Toosie Slide isn’t even fair

Drake has top 10 hits just as big as weekends #1s.

they don't aim to influence the same crowds. At least not right now. Maybe a couple of years ago they did.

    Drake. Not even close tbh.

He influenced Weeknd too so that’s a plus

You sure there’s not even a little bit of overlap with their fan base? They both seem to have the goal of being the biggest pop stars on the planet (with Drake aiming for more approval from the hip hop fan base, but he’s still a popstar nonetheless)

yeah ofcourse there's overlap but I really think that's more due to them both being Black artists. and we can't ignore how connected their careers are, Drake was a lot of fans' introduction to even hearing The Weeknd.

If Weeknd was a white artist and never collabed with Drake, I doubt we would be having convos like this.

That discussion is going to go in circles lol I think when talking about the culture and impact hard facts are the go to

    Drake for people of color

    Weeknd if we’re talkng whites

    Crine

Did you throw in colour to include non black people like Indians and arabs? Then ur prolly right

Sorry but Abel hasnt been all that influential. He had his own sound from Trilogy to BBTM and people wanted to be all mysterious and d***ged out, but he turned into an 80s tribute act (a damn good one with amazing music) after that, hardly anyone wants to step into that lane or draw from it

  • Dec 10, 2023

This conversation is even more valid in 2023 given the fact Weeknd out streamed Drake off album cycle.

But Drake is still bigger given his consistent over the past 15 years, cultural impact and cannon of hits.

Who in the f*** would say the Weeknd

    The Weeknd.

    Drake in the US/Canada.

    The Weeknd.

    Drake in the US/Canada.

    Basically this.

Weeknd's music is incredibly dominant and impactful globally but Drake dwarfs him in North America.

I'd say Abel had more direct influence on music though with his role in Take Care as well as shaping up the Alt R&B lane that constantly bites his Trilogy sound.

Drake did popularize the phrase "YOLO"(which is dated af now) and help hip hop become commercially viable like Eminem and Nelly back in the day but I don't really think Drake's influence is that widespread in the rap industry. Tbh, I don't think Kendrick or Cole's is all that widespread either.

Wayne, Keef, Cudi, Future, Thugger, and Carti seem to have much more direct influences and biters in the rap industry. So, it depends on what one means by "culturally influential" because there's some subjectivity to that.

The only thing that supports this statement is that The Weeknd's singles are much larger.

Drake has just as many hits if not more as well as being the focal point of Toronto/Canada from a tourism, sporting and cultural standpoint.

XO hasn't been able to diversify it's brand in the same way that OVO has with clothing and festivals.

Also factor in that Drake had quite a significant impact on Weekend's introduction to the mainstream.

So yeah, at face value it may seem like he's surpassed Drake but when you look at things holistically he doesn't hold a candle to Drake's overall cultural relevance.

At the end of the day it's an all encompassing thing when making that comparison.

weeknd way better off the simple argument that drake been putting out mid since views and weeknd dropped one of the greatest pop albums ever made

  • Apr 27, 2024

Ill take the person who didnt go #2 to Gunna

  • Apr 27, 2024

Drake obviously, but I've listened to The Weeknd much more than Drake over the past 13 or so years.

Also something I just learned, The Weeknd is now first in the world for Spotify monthly listeners? S***...I'm actually surprised it's not Taylor.

S*** maybe he actually is bigger than Drake
