FF8 or FF9 if you want something better than 7

FFXII or FFXV if you want more open world action/mmo rpgish

FFXIV if you actually want an mmo

FFXIII if none of these matched you

I almost wish 7 wasn’t as big as it was because, like anything of that magnitude, there will be hoards of “edgy” counter culture kids who can never just give it the proper credit it deserves. Some of them will go as far as to say that the objectively worse installment of the series (8, spare the newer ones) was actually better, and that the “mainstream” just didn’t “get” it.

7 is the best. It’s one of the greatest video game stories ever told and it is miles ahead of anything with the name Final Fantasy attached to it. The game is beyond a masterpiece. And that is why it is being remade. And that is why theaters of people around the world were legitimately bawling their eyes out when just the first glimpse of teaser was shown.

i literally gave it the only iconic status, but i prefer 8 and 9 and think they are better FF and JRPG in general. stans like you just reaffirm my belief that 7 is just for the casuls.

FF6 or FF7 is a good starting point, everything from 4-12 + Tactics is probably worth checking out.

9 is probably one of the best JRPGs ever. Sakaguchi himself said it's more or less his ideal vision of what 'final fantasy' is and I'm inclined to agree. 8 is underrated too.

in actuality those might be the best choices for someone whose never played a FF game before. the people saying skip XIII are most likely og fans holding it up to different standards.

i completely agree! they are great entry level rpgs. got a nice mixture of linear and open world elements, interesting combat (XIII at least), great characters, etc. Lightning Returns is the only actually bad game from the trilogy imo
