The humor, music and art is top tier is crazy while still taking itself and the world a good amount serious

The first song of the star mountain peak in Paper Mario 64 has always been stuck in my head too, I used to just walk around that place to listen to the song on repeat as a kid lmao, same with Bomberman Hero's song Redial which is on the selection screen iirc and I would just have it the console to listen to while I played with toys or read a book

I like it but the way it's glazed, especially last decade was always way overblown to me

I'm not fond of "stage play" idea in it and how it takes it self way less "serious" (for lack of a better term I cant think rn) and the writing also dips imo, and yeah I agree on the level n area design too

I do think Thousand Year door boss battles are dope asl tho and it's still the 2nd best of the series, it's not bad, it's a good game in fact, but I think when compared to 64 it has a lot of cracks - but on its own or if you never played 64 I can def see it being even amazing to you (part of my gripe tho lmao with how lot of ppl didnt play the og since it along with conker and banjo tooie n iirc turok 3 were like the last console exclusive games released for n64 in 2001 and 2001 before they shifted focused to gba then the GameCube)

The soundtrack is so insane and it's wild how most of them are just lil motifs

My fav era of game osts is the n64/ps1/Dreamcast era of games - they're "CD quality" now instead of bits and can fit more traditional sounds and legit synths n ish, but it still has that legit video gamey music sound identity and unique sound theory/selection on top of it but evolved that hits a perfect balance of video game music and "real" music - to where the PS2/GameCube/OG Xbox and beyond eras they could now fully make "legit" music like record labels or movies that made it lose a kind of identity and erased the idea of "video game" music

Era just so goated in general imo and the perfect balance of video gamey-ness mixed with the later more polished-ness
