some of those albums appeal to white demographic. cut it out.

Black men and women make emotionally honest and forward thinking albums about their lives that gets critical praise = trying to appeal to whites

You don't see how this is racist of you? You're probably the type of person who thinks black people are only allowed to make DaBaby type music or else they're "trying to be white." Let black express themselves any way they want to.

The problem is that the guy he’s replying to is using Eurocentric sounding albums that black people made to peddle the idea that whites are accepting of music with different standards than theirs. That’s what’s actually dishonest.

*Technically for The Money Store, Death Grips isn't just a black group but everyone knows MC Ride is the force behind the band and he's black.

So looking at arguably the top 3 most popular critical "tastemakers" in current music, 18 of the top 30 albums among them were by non-white artists. So this idea that "white art" is all that gets appreciated by critics isn't true. You guys just want to justify your hatred for an album you've never even heard and can't appreciate because you're not open minded towards genres that aren't hip hop, mainstream pop, or the occasional r&b. It's fine to have your preferences, but Fiona's album is really good.

What I find hilarious about the p4k list is that Ye had their no.1 spot locked down for a whole decade and then they put him at 2 because of the Trump s***

    GoodbyeCarl

If hip hop heads listened to more than just hip hop (i.e. other genres that don't have to be white dominated) there would be no problem. But it's still equally as corny as metal heads being strictly metal, kpop stans being strictly kpop, and etc.

This is a music forum lmao

That’s why I said “grew up on”

    1) I’m the guy he’s replying to.
    2) Those are not eurocentric sounds. Most of them are hip hop albums which is rooted in black music. TPAB for instance incorporates jazz - historically black genre - and includes famous black musicians as writers and features while discussing the plights of black people. GKMC uses the sounds of west coast hip hop which dates back to Dre as well as funk music, yet another genre important in black culture. Frank making an ambient sounding R&B album discussing his own feeling of isolation is a breath of fresh air in music that isn’t appealing towards whites at all. It’s unique to him. Solange and Beyonce made albums that sound like modern versions of black 90s R&B style music. The list goes on.

It’s really f***ed up to try to take away an artist’s black card in a sense because they make music that you personally don’t view as “black enough.”

they can be rooted in black music and still appeal to white people.

"True artistry" = traditionally white artistic value

I think everybody besides a white supremacist disagrees with this statement. if you mean something about " western canon" being largely white and having an outsized influence over our tastes and desires and a***ysis, sure.

And it reeks in all artforms.

In all artforms? Hip-hop? Jazz? Blues? Black people have conquered spaces for themselves in all art. To the extent people are accused of fetishizing said art for its blackness rather than its merit.

Now I love Fiona too, and I don't even wanna use her as the timely scapegoat of this phenomenon, but it's funny to see through some people propping it up so vapidly in the name of eurocentric standards in art.

Who is doing this? Pitchfork? The people who faun over every trap mixtape calling it "a smattering of frank candor inspiring pop euphoria"? Users on this hip-hop website?

We fall for it Oscar season especially too, not just white fans but all fans; "this movie is Oscar worthy" a lot of the time is due to fulfilling those standards not because of its quality and entertainment value (which is why Parasite's accolades was so refreshing)

The Oscars are a pretty bad institution. A lot of people recognize that. As you said, they've addressed it a little. They've always had a category celebrating foreign films.

The point is there is no such thing as style vs substance - the traditional white style is always seen as superior in art, and we've all been conditioned to agree

I have no clue what this means. The style vs substance argument is rife within criticism. I don't think you've succinctly defined what a "traditional white style" is nor have you specified who is favoring it at the expense of other art.

This a very weak post. It seems like you didn't like the album. That's okay. I'm interested in discussing this if you can elaborate on specific examples. I have no reason to believe people like this because it's "white" any more than I believe people like other music because it is "black". @Brave
