Only because men have become possessive of property has this become important. Before individuals owned things, when societies were communal, women preferred to have s***with many men. When she would have s***with many men and become pregnant, there would be no way to determine the father. Thus, all the men in the community that she had s***with would raise the child. There was no need to trap a male when all the males would provide for her child.
Once men wanted control over their property, the only way a man could know a child was is, is if the woman does not have s***with any other men. Obviously the woman will always know she is the mother.
