    that was one song ...?

you gonna throw away drake's enitire discog of hits and features bc of one line about instagram?

this is how I know this sxn has no real knowledge of anything outside of "I hate drake he sucks"

i mean i could make a whole list of examples lol

relatability is just not high on my list of what constitutes to great songwriting. hooks are though, and i admit drake is a great hook writer (assuming he writes most of them ), but that's pretty much it as far his pen skills goes

Do you guys have to disqualify Drake to make other artists seem greater?

Isn't that kind of, for lack of a better term, "cowardly" in a competitive space?

  • Drake
    Kendrick Lamar
    Jay-Z
    Nas
    Frank Ocean
    Michael Jackson (underrated tbh)
    Andre 3000
    Ice Cube
    Big Krit
    Lupe Fiasco
    Eminem
    Common
    Danny Brown
    Biggie
    Tupac
    Ne-yo

Also I've seen here on this site, sometimes it's a hook, sometimes 2-4 lines in a song. Sometimes as low as one line.

But if it's other artist you guys ignore it. It's almost impossible to perform at that level writing every single line that you rap.

songwriters isn't just ability to write in depth "raps"

songwriting is a FULL spectrum of ability to create hits/melodies/catchy hooks/relatable lines

it's between jay and drake, no one even comes close to them honestly. kendrick is one of the best rappers of all time but in terms of songwriting he doesn't really come close to drake or jay (yet) I'm sorry

This is such a bland view of songwriting no disrespect.

Everyone isn't chasing hits. It's stupid to hold The Roots, D'Angelo, or Kendrick to the hitmaking standards of Drake whose style is more naturally geared towards Pop/Billboard than theirs, but that doesn't mean they aren't amazing musicians or artists.

The same way it's hard to hold Drake to their standard bc he's not the most complex storyteller and isn't as focused on making complete bodies of work as they are.

For what they try to accomplish, Kendrick is just as good as making universally acclaimed bodies of work as Drake is making songs that can chart without really trying.

Success with Songwriting depends on the intent of the song. Every song isn't made for Billboard.

name 2 songs that someone "wrote" for drake that went #1

Nigga what? Just because you have #1 hits doesn’t mean you’re in the conversation of the best songwriters
Fetty Wap, French Montana and Post Malone have over a million #1 hits lol

The whole point of having a ghostwriter is that the artist acts like they’re the ones who penned it. Drake’s been known to steal ideas from others, stole the hotline bling dance move, stole One Dance etc.

The fact that he allegedly has ghostwriters makes up a question. What did Drake REALLY write? Even his verse on Kendrick’s poetic justice doesn’t sound like Drake

Andre 3000 is an amazing songwriter yet his best written songs aren’t the ones that went #1.

Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar for their respective genres and it’s not even close.
