Sorry but Curtis was weak and very far from a classic. It was a pretty lazy album with a few huge songs.
disagree
he had a trilogy of classics before he fell off musically
during his trilogy run he was so much more successful than everyone else in NYC when it comes to music for all 3 albums, im talking Jay, Nas, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Jadakiss, all of Dipset and DMX, these G Unit guys had NYC in a chokehold while everyone else tried for em and then Game and Buck held their ends for time too lol
Beg for Mercy and Hunger for More are definitely also classic albums, if you disagree with those then idk bud
Jay then 50, why tf is this more than one page?
Dre and Em
Bad Boy/Diddy and Mase
Murder Inc/Jay Z, Ja Rule, DMX
Hot Boys/Wayne & Juvenile
all these people contributed to the genre being about sales FIRST and culture SECOND
can just say it was the late 90s

Curtis ain't even close to classic fam.
Now, if you want to talk about GRODT and some other projects, yes. But not Curtis.
Curtis was basura save for I Get Money and a few cuts. I bought both albums in the sales week and Graduation is levels better.

Nah, I think GRODT, The Massacre, Beg For Mercy and Banks's HFM are classics, but Curtis was a disappointment even if the singles were huge. He got lazy after all the success from his previous projects.
You just skipped Em lol
Em is tricky because a lot of his stans like to use sales/charts to give him GOAT status but Em never emphasized it at all.
Closest would be when he was clowning MGK in Killshot but Em shouted out Masta Ace at the Grammy's at the height of his popularity. He's never been a sales guy.
Jay then 50, why tf is this more than one page?
Yeah, don’t know why people are saying Drake stans lmao
Drake killed hip hop
artists used to put a lot more effort and experiment more on music
than Drake just comes in making the most generic music imaginable and kills. Taught rappers to never try again.

If most of these young rapper's are Future, Thugger, and Keef's sons, how does Drake get any blame?
Ya'll really think the drill/street movement that's going on right has anything to do with Drake?
Ya'll niggas blame Drake for everything lol

Em is a humble dude, he didn't start talking s*** until Revival flopped and he came back talking sales and wearing gold jewelry, but that's selfdefense from the haters lol
But his numbers are big.

Breh we talking about who made hip hop all about sales not who inspired most of the new rappers
Drake completely lowered the standards of the music and shifted hip hop towards this pop/hip hop fusion that characterizes the most popular music being made. He basically made it cool to sell tf out and make s***ty music for the bag. Maybe Wayne is also to blame cus he did the same s*** first.
Jay-Z Dre Em even 50 cent never compromised the quality of their music on the scale drake did.
You a b**** and I’d slap the s*** out of you
Shut up before you get touched
u wild

Lol...are you serious?
Kingdom Come was trash. Encore was semi-trash. Curtis was trash. And Rebirth is one the WOAT albums in rap history and I say this as a Wayne stan. Also, Jay has been known to hop on trends to d***ride the hottest artists atm.
Stylistically, that autotuned sing-rapping style that's popular is due to Future, Thugger, and Keef. That's who made it popular to the next generation and these newer rappers are just doing a more watered down version of their rapping styles.
Roddy Rich even said that Future and Thugger were the Pac and Biggie of his generation.
And rap is mainly popular now because of streaming and other genres falling off. Drake dominates streams though.
According to Shammy, all these newer street/drill rappers emulating Future/Thugger/Keef and not being able to drop a classic album is all Drake's fault.
Yet Gibbs is dropping quality albums left and right in spite of Drake's success and he just was posted up with Drake the other day.
Sounds like a copout.

I have nothing against drake it's just my opinion that he changed the zeitgeist of hip hop towards sales and popularity being the most relevant factors in judging an artists career. It's not like he did it on purpose it just happened because of the type of fans he brought in. Half of ktt is hardcore drake stans an they the ONLY niggas who care about sales
Also next time, quote me

That's more so social media than Drake though. Stan Twitter popularized that convo on Twitter and social media and it spread to hip hop forums.
Keep in mind, too, that many personalities like Charlamagne, Joe Budden, and DJ Akademiks have helped popularize "chart watching" too for content to talk about.
Honestly, this whole Q is confusing because the OP worded it like he's asking who started the trend and the answer would be Jay, 50, and Puff. But social media popularized the sales talk online.

Fair points i guess the timing with social media an Drake's career popping off is a coincidence
either curtis vs graduation in '07 or tha carter 3 in '08. prolly even before then
