I was thinking bout how IceSpice blew up as a meme but kept getting hits, and how Nettspend went viral of a snippet and became a meme but then ppl started f***ing with the music and it had me thinking. The line between serious artist and meme is very thin.
I remember lil yachty was a joke for the longest time but he managed to stick around anyways and now he's just another normal established rapper. I distinctly remember Young Thug being a bit of a meme early on too, but now he's a legend undisputed.
Drain Gang the craziest example of this cuz I remember it most vividly, they were the butt of every joke in like 2018. You put on a bladee song and niggas would look at you like you're unironically bumping IceJJfish or something. Then some time in the pandemic it switched and they actually became cool to listen to! I couldn't believe it went from like who the f*** is listening to this retarbeb s*** then boom this is the cool mysterious music to bump.
Something similar but in in reverse is I remember between Rodeo and Astroworld you were cool for listening to Travis Scott. But then it flipped n Travis became a rapper for white middle schoolers who play fortnite.
So I'm thinking who's being dismissed as a joke rn but is gonna be normalized in the future? Like will sexyredd occupy the same space as a MeganTheeStallion in 2 years? Is it just a question of powering through and sticking around in the face of mockery?
drake the type of dude to make a wish upon a star
Drake is both a meme and a serious artist, he's a punchline but you also don't get made fun of for listening to him
pretty sure almost all rappers post 2015 blew up off a meme at some point but thats not a bad thing
So many meme bs artists this site has tried to hitch their wagon to
They were right about Yeat. He went from meme to #2 on Billboard with so much hype for 2093 rn on some EA s***. He is the chosen one

Where did the Yeat street team go? Did everyone hipster up right after?

I'm saying, a lot of the "meme bs artists" people write off never go away. Then those same people pretend they always f***ed with em

For every Yeat there’s at least two Mario Judahs

He had legitimate hype, just didn't do anything with it
this feels like a programmer doing research trying to figure out how to teach a computer how being cool works

He messed up by pretending to beat up his girlfriend for promo

Young Thug is a big one that people try and pretend they always f***ed with him from the start

almost everything in music is a joke until a large group of people start to attach to it and take it seriously.
with the 2017 Florida sound, XXXTENTACION and Lil Pump kinda blew up from being viral memes
I'm sure people made fun of Jay-Z for being a struggling rapper in his mid 20s, and look at him now.
even people like Nirvana were clowned on at their peak
but obviously the music connected with someone
Young Thug is a big one that people try and pretend they always f***ed with him from the start
Lowkey me
Dawg for what did you write that long ass OP. No one outside of ktt calls these new cats meme artists

Nah some stuff definetely taken less seriously than others at first impression. Est Gee or PinkPantheress was never a meme for example.

he already fell off on the lowest of keys. like if his next album is more of the same sht it will be his last successful album
he was never the most talented guy from his scene, he just had the best management. I think a lot of people were blown away by his music bc it was their first taste of the soundcloud underground scene, but now yeat music is old news and people are finding more interesting underground guys to care about

obviously he's still up rn. im saying i don't see the longevity, unless he's able to rlly switch s*** up. his hype seems to be plateauing while more interesting ppl from his scene are blowing up
Young Thug is a big one that people try and pretend they always f***ed with him from the start
Thug is a weird one cuz anyone who liked him during that massive Rich Gang drop with RHQ most likely treated him seriously
But he became a meme to casual fans a bit after that before being taken seriously
