I thought the collar and shoulders being the right dimensions would make the top button easy to have buttoned

OP might’ve gotten the wrong neck size dress shirt. Can just size up half a size and it’ll be much more comfortable.

Definitely this is the issue. Never had an issue with dress shirt collars.

Also @op needs to buy shirts with collar stays.
