  • Because the new generation aint f***ing with music like that unfortunately

People are just getting bored of music itself as a concept

  • Dec 30, 2023

Same is true with online NBA discussions too. Even Adam Silver pointed that out recently.

It boils down to either people forming parasocial relationships with the artists they stan or people falling in love with the narratives of artists more than their actual music.

Taylor Swift, for example, has infamously attracted tons of fake stans who love her for dominating sales and charts and streams more than her actual music. They love stanning "the biggest artist in the world" which makes them feel like they're part of the "winning team." Same could be said for certain Hovengers. They love Jay-Z the billionaire who bagged Beyonce and is a showcase of Black prosperity and being a "boss" more than Jay-Z the musician/lyricist.

There's also people who like the personalities and personas of certain artists and feel like it's imperative to defend the artist's music or actions no matter what because they're essentially living vicariously through them. The Barbs and Eminem stans in particular tend to exemplify this.

All in all, it's very complex. But it just boils down to niggas falling in love with the artists they listen to or wanting the right narratives and numbers to "justify" their stannery.

Cause it grabs your attention. Same reason why crazy newspaper article headlines did the same way back in the day. Internet just amplified that

Metallica, for example, has been releasing questionable stuff later in their career, yet they're still largely considered one of the best ever. In contrast, with someone like Eminem, there are people saying his later albums are tarnishing his legacy/discography, or kick him off of an all-time list. Hip-hop fans don’t really show the same respect to older artists and call it “dust” or whatever else.

@op you should take a look at every legacy act’s subreddit. Everyone from U2 to Bruce Springsteen has fans that constantly critique & s*** on everything they do now.

I, too, that it was just a newer generation thing, but hell no. Gen X & baby boomers hate on their faves as well

Popular social platforms’ activity are driven by exposure algorithms to drive up clicks and engagement, increasing ad revenue and data reserves for extraction and sale

This means more engaging posts are more profitable, and the most engaging posts are indeed the inflammatory or elementary ones

Circlejerks and troll wars are forever

isn’t is awful that literally everything ever boils down to capitalism deteriorating our society

sometimes it makes sense to frame discussions in a goal-oriented way. like if ur a therapist, u want to have a better understanding of ur patient at the end of each session. if ur a team of scientists, u want to reach an accurate conclusion after deliberation.

sometimes though, that kind of framing is misguided. Like talking about music, for example. what is our end goal supposed to be? Are we supposed to reach some hidden truth at the end of a thread? I just don't think that's a realistic expectation. Lets face it, we're here because talking about this s*** is a good way to pass the time.
