Lol c'mon now. Kiki's Delivery Service is an hour of hand drawn up skirts and that's one of the less creepy anime creators of his time. Dragon Ball is baby d*** and "bloomers". Half of the TV shows are about how the return of Japanese imperialism would be good but Japanese people need to make more babies. Women are often infantalized and speak in blushes and squeals.
That's not to say anime and manga don't have merit but it's obvious where the stigma comes from lol

Anime do be having some very weird themes but the ones that don’t are better than the best TV
Mar 1, 2024Tbh I started watching anime during covid through recommendations and pretty much always managed to avoid the most problematic kind of shows. but yeah even in the anime thread I've said that the prevalent sexualization of (often minor) characters is disgusting.
But there are a lot of amazing stories being told through the medium - some of which gave me strong and unforgettable emotions. That generalization at the beginning of the thread is a bit disingenuous.
