Is the extensive community that surrounds rappers something that allows songs to disseminate?

this one also seems pretty huge currently with people buying/trading leaks. Maybe im not as up on this but it definitely seems like a Carti unreleased song is genuinely valuable whereas an indie artist of equivalent popularity idk if you could even really sell a song of theirs lol

There are definitely bands with good leaks / unreleased music, but they don't have trackers with thousands of leaks like Ye or Carti

You just download the "rare tracks comp" from some personal blog site that hasn't been touched since 2006 and you're usually set

I think another thing is that rappers like to go on Ig live and play unreleased music

Pop is huge too.

Madonna, Prince, MJ etc and that's just the top line.

It exists in Rock as well, but Rock artists usually release their unreleased stuff once it leaks or get huge interests.

This culture does exist in other genres, but the online auction thing is more Rap while other genres are more private seller to seller/groups and they also have more legal threat then most rappers are willing to go through, so their leaks are usually kept under wraps as well for a long time - like the MJ songs or the deadhead people etc.

Also most people on this site will obviously have a blind spot in their groups and socials that want show them the "underbelly" of other genres.

The honest answer is, is that Rap isn't as protected as other genres

Unfortunately

It's the only genre that can be as ballsy as having public auctions and ads for unreleased work and most of the time not face any repercussions

Other genres are more private with their selling of unreleased material, and their leaks are within the hardcore base for years until it finally surfaces for the general person

Rap is sadly, as always, w****d out and seen as lesser, even in law

cuz mfs be sending beats and opens to anybody

Tbh I think there's quite a bit of reverence and prominence towards unreleased material in other genres especially s*** like demos, alternative takes and bootlegs.

Prince - Camille and Beach Boys - SMILE and all those MJ demos come to mind

But the connection hip hop has with leaks probably stems from the mixtape culture and street teams pushing Cds. Nas - I Am was also one of the first major release to ever leak on the internet so that had a snowball effect.

Hip hop also has more of a connection to the internet as it's prime happened during the internet unlike other genres. So when musicmafia came on the scene, they were only really leaking hip hop songs, and that sure contributed to it
