I remember it being because the software the original ktt website was on was way too limited/broken for the mods and community to keep on using it. Not too easy to guess how, the registration was straight up broken and the mobile website still looked like ipod era iOS for the longest. I had to make an account there by contacting the only reliable admin I knew. Smaller things included people wanting updated smileys or sxns. I'd assume the switch was mainly driven by the admins wanting to update to better forum software to avoid things like this. You can't advance with insanely outdated forum software that barely lets anyone do anything. The ktt software s*** updated like 3 years after, so I think it's alright to use a forum like that now, but it's been far too long for migration back and the admins still need guaranteed direct control over the site too ig.

S sold KTT1 to some company. That company continued to neglect the forum and here we are now...
