Drake is more of a pop star who incorporates rapping into the fold of his musical output. I love Drake, man has three classics easily, but I just don't think of him as a rapper I guess. He's an artist who raps sometimes, and is good at it when he does.

Kendrick is very much a rapper. I personally think he's a tad overrated even if he's a tremendous artist and a skilled rapper (he's not cracking my top 10 tho as far as raw rap skills is concerned, but that's just me). But K Dot really doesn't try to be anything other than a rapper. Drake from day one has pretty much blurred the genres he's operated in so that you can't really pin him down.

The Drake-Kenny "rivalry" always seemed forced to me, and it just gets cornier the more these artists grow.

Bc they've been the 2 most popular rappers since the last decade

Plus the sexual tension they had for a few years

Mj was a pop star who incorporated elements of r&b and rock in his music and had way more mass appeal than prince..yet people always compared them despite their music being way different and them having different appeals.

The problem is people can never accept that there is only 1 true number 1 and always want to compare someone else

When it comes to rap, Drake is not and has never been #1. Dude is just not at that level as a rapper, nothing personal, because I don't think Drake himself really cares about being in the conversation of elite rappers. Kendrick frankly is barely in that convo as far as raw rap skill is concerned, even if he's most definitely in the convo for overall artistry.

Drake is #1 in the pop music world, an arguably harder feat than being #1 in hip hop. Pop is an all encompassing mass of musical trends fused into the contemporary musical zeitgeist. Drake is and has been #1 in that department for about a decade now. Kendrick is just #1 as a rap artist. They're both at the top of their games, they just play in different arenas. The comparison genuinely never made sense to me.

Nobody compares Drake to Kendrick, they only compare Kendrick to Drake

I guess. But I mean, let's look at 2001. Jay and Em were the two most popular dope rappers. I don't think people really pitted them against each other. Yeah, renegading happened, but that was more sportsmanlike competition, not a perceived beef. Drake and K Dot since like 2012 have been pitted against each other by the media.

As far as being the #1 most popular guy who raps, yes, indisputably, Drake is #1, and has been since like 2015 (Eminem, for better or worse, was still the most popular guy in the biz from 2010-2014, though he and Drake were neck and neck in 2013).

But I'm talking rap skill, like history book s***. Drake is a good rapper, like I said, I f*** with dude. People who aggressively hate on Drake are corny imo. But he's not batting alongside Hov, Biggie, G Rap, Three Stacks, etc.

And also, Drake's popularity is largely due to him straddling so many different genres successfully. Dude has had his hand in the pot with contemporary R&B, neo-soul, alternative r&b, dancehall, various EDM styles, trap, pop rap, cloud rap, even a bit of like art pop typa s*** here or there. He's even flirted with grime and UK drill. He's far more prominent as a general pop artist than as a pure rapper, I feel like most of his fans really gravitate towards his melodic typa music more than his bars.

Everyone either compares themselves to Drake in the industry, want to collab, or revolve industry commotion around him

Drake has also received more praise universally from industry artists

People feel the need to compare the 2 because every dominant figure in history need an underdog to rival him/her & Kendrick is that underdog

It’s a unwritten universal law

Kanye doesn’t even care to rival, lose sleep or feel threatened by Kendrick

That alone speak levels to how big the gap is between Drake & Kendrick
