Hopefully this doesn’t get derailed but I’m lookin it up and it’s sayin a whole bunch of reasons. I was a journalism major in college and i can’t recall the AP Style book sayin anything on it
probably by the way races are categorized in the US or something idk
i think generally white is understood to be a group of different nationalities changing over time (ie irish weren’t considered white at one point) where the former is considered to be a singular group, even though that’s not true because there’s plenty of nationalities within that group as well

Someone online said that becuz the slaves were stripped away of their identity and what not, they’re different from African Americans so black people who aren’t from Africa are a unique ethnic group so u capitalize black like u would asian/African American and such
Idk but probably because black in America can refer to anyone with dark skin but often is in the context of blacks descended from slaves in Africa, who also have common identity amongst themselves
doesnt happen in other countries all races get the lower case treatment as it should be
Because of slavery
According to the Chicago Manual of Style, "names of ethnic and national groups are capitalized". this is also supported by The Diversity Style Guide (2019).
It's also an acknowledgement that due to slavery, colonization, and trafficking, many Black people no longer have a nation or ethnic group to turn to (e.g. Nigerian, Somali, etc). therefore, we should show their only identifier the same respect we'd show Asian, Indigenous, or European people by using proper capitalization.

yeah that makes sense then
but to play the devils advocate wouldnt the identifier be ‘African-American’ as ‘black’ doesnt really indicate a specific history or nationality

Well I may be wrong but that’s why on any official documents when you fill out your ethnicity it usually says African-American/Black instead of one or the other.

Precisely
The formation of an oppressed class within the US stripped from their cultural lineage created a Black American ethnicity
“White culture” in america doesn’t exist in the way black culture does

did you even read what you quoted? the explanation is right there
