this is simply not true. all psychological studies conducted at a scientific/professional level go thru the same rigorous standards as studies in the fields of biology, chemistry, etc.
Yea but in general its not mechanistic its relational
Psychology is really respected these days - therapy not being a taboo hush hush thing or laughed at subject anymore for the most part is a big part of it
Of course there are always people who hate what they don't understand or what they feel like is "tells them about themselves"
But overall in the general public and mainstream it's probably in the best place it's been in terms of success and image, and iirc it's one of the best fields in health to now be in of the last decade
That makes sense, I think the fact that it has to do with learning about ourselves, makes it difficult to appreciate because it’s some egotistical type s*** that like we protect ourselves and put up defences etc
Right right but I think there’s still scientific method applied as much as possible and so lack of rigor being a basis for criticism is sort of a non starter unless we’re talking about a specific study imo
To defer back to my OP, I just wonder why it feels as though there’s a lot of negative opinion about psychology stuff in general beyond the idea of “that’s not real science” because I think most people don’t really subscribe to the use of scientific evidence for a lot of things anyways…
I kind of think it’s because it’s a study that feels like it should be intuitive in nature, but I don’t think it is intuitive., I think many emerging trends in psychology, research about trauma and mental disorders, etc. credence to the idea, that it’s not intuitive. But if there’s a distressed in the Way that the studies are conducted or The findings are reached then it becomes kind of a moot point so I mean…
I feel like I’m talking in circles here but I feel like it’s kind of like a “well that’s an obvious thing duh” type of discrediting on the majority’s part? Sorry for the typos or any sentences that don’t make sense. I’m doing voice to text and sometimes it doesn’t work well. I appreciate you engaging in discussion at all
Ok what i think i should say is i think real psychology is real science but most people dont go deep enough to understand that. They pick up cliche facts they can tell at parties and leave it there, which gives it a bad reputation. The rigor isnt built into the field the way it is with "hard sciences", so it tends to be used in less technical/accurate ways

Yea but everything ur saying is relational. Its relatively better than it used to be and its relatively a better field than other types of healthcare. But beyond that compartment its definitely still not considered as rigorous or accurate as hard sciences and its still a hard job compared to say what i do (computer science)

Fair fair I get what u mean
Simply put it’s because it’s a trash degree that won’t earn you good money or lace you with a good career
Psychology is a placeholder degree at best while you figure out what you actually want to major in. Don’t actually graduate with that s***
learning psychology is good as a hobby but stupid for a major or a career
psychology definitely helped me manage my mental health along with philosophy

I see the value in practice (therapy), work (Organisational Psychology and Wellbeing), theory (research) and education (pedagogical psychology)
Not sure why it’s valueless as these are the central tenants of our lives

How complex is the Maths?
Depending on the person, I have a cousin that can do trig in her head but I stopped at time tables. It's a truly a spectrum

yeah because you gotta picked a side that wasn't right and tried to stay there now you're stuck counting on your fingers

Tbh while they were picking sides, I was talking to girls and playing football. I paid her $20 a week to do my math hw in college
Super easy to me
You mean the subject matter is easy for you? Or it’s easy for you to understand why people view it a Certain way?
I think the proximity to humanity and people as a study makes it feel less makes it feel less valid or something for a lot of folks because it’s like “oh yeah that should be obvious or that’s intuitive” or whatever.
But everything is intuitive after it’s already said, and many things in psychology aren’t necessarily intuitive on a logical framework type of thing..
I don’t know. I’m just rambling doing voice to text
how you came to this conclusion?
what's your mbti?
i think you might be on the spectrum

The premise of the thread assumes we think psychology is regarded as low tier or whatever the title says (I can't read the whole title from the reply prompt)
But everyone may not agree with that too begin with!
But also when it comes to mental stuff, I think people like me just hate when folks use invisible mental things to explain constant negative external actions
