Tired of all of this pity pat back and forth.

I could be wrong, but in this era, it appears as if rappers throw indirect shots and don’t directly call out their opponents. They don’t say their names. What happened?

    Ether opening line: “Fuck JayZ”

Takeover: “Ask NAS, he don’t want it with Hov, nooo!!!”

Hit Em Up: The whole song basically, lol

Why are rappers afraid to directly call out another rapper?

NGL I thought this the whole time people were treating the Like That verse as some crazy s***. Great verse but he technically didn’t say their names

But it also would feel weird to hear Drake or Cole or Kendrick say each others names in a diss. I feel like the perception is that’s kinda “cheap” idk if that’s the right word. Tacky? Idk but I feel like now that’s what Drake is finna do lol.

@retro_77 in a few posts under this got the right word that people would use: clout chasing lol

Nah Drake is gonna let Cole handle it. He might do a sub way in the future but he’s gonna stay out now. High risk, low reward for him.

We’ll see what Kendrick does and if he tries to drag Drake in further.

To avoid being labeled "clout chasers" in today's social media age.

Youngboy called people out directly too in one of his songs and got shatted on for it.

Modern rap fans hate name drops these days because they consider so-called "clout chasing" to be the worst sin in rap and have more respect for subs and sneak dissing.

    This is crazy to me

So it’s considered bad to directly call out someone by name?

With regards to Jay-Z and Nas, quite a few subs were sent back and forth before Hov said Nas’s name at Summer Jam and dissed him on Takeover, which then gave us Ether.

Pac just liked calling niggas out and saying their name in tracks. Especially after getting on Death Row.

Yep. It's considered "clout chasing" now and looked down upon. Stan culture online fuels this train of thought too.

Sneak dissing, dry snitching, and subbing is more respected because it's viewed as more clever and appears less "desperate" to people.

    Times have changed.

  • mysterious music

  • Testosterone levels have declined

  • imo acting like a really obviously targeted verse or line is a sub cos it doesn't drop the other person's name in at some point is dumb too

  • Cause you and other people don't actually want them to.

  • Birdman once said the beef component is bad for business especially if you in gangsta rap space. Brands shy away from you when you talk smokey.

Dont scare the white folks basically.

i mean not if there's legitimate reason for beef. but most of the time there isn't and beef is a sales gambit

  • Control out now

  • the moment that changed everything @op

Hov saying 'Ask Nas, he don't want it with Hov' then getting spun might actually play into this too

Less embarrassing to get washed if there's plausible deniability

  • The goat of current "rap fans" needs 10 years hiatus to tell you to lower your expectations "I'm not your savior". They will tolerate literally anything.

I just think it’s weaker to play the “if the shoe fits” game
