Phonte coined a term for them on Questlove’s podcast. Racially Ambiguous Whispering B****es (RAWB). Haven’t stopped calling them that tbh.
Lmaoooo
“ I'd say billie eillish really popularised it again”
Even beyonce hopped on the train for a while as early as 13/14
That low-fi whisper ‘vocal fry’ singing has been at the forefront of pop AND RnB for close to a decade now
The singing style never lost its popularity or prominence once it started seeing success from the alt-pop/folk stars around 2013/2014
Phonte one of the most underrated ever tbh
facts
Act like Selena Gomez, Lana and lorde hasn’t been snagging top 5s throughout the 10s coughing, breathing and whispering all over the mic
Even the dance tracks in the mid-late 10s had white women telling mystic secrets on them
It popular because it doesn’t require any vocal ability and allows the artist to be carried by the production. Same reason why autotune and melodyne made it so easy for hiphop artists to sing their own hooks and makes it easier to be melodious

billie is a good singer though
billie is a good singer though
She has a nice voice. It’s easy on the ears, pleasant and her emotive delivery is what sells the sentiment of the song. As far as actual vocal ability goes.. she’s in the same tier as the rest of the whispering artists vocally: lorde, Selena, Lana, Taylorshe got one of those bob dylan singer-songwriter voices..average. Someone I’d consider good is a jhene or a summer walker or sza. Billie ain even on that level
Unless the production is really good what’s the point of not flexing great vocals
sometimes they're not even singing just talking quietly
sometimes they're not even singing just talking quietly
Exactly that’s when it’s just spoken word
can someone explain billies appeal? Not even joking
She’s quirky and relatable! Billie is depressed just like me
