interesting debate. I personally don't think Australia should be it's own continent though, for it's own reasons.

theres 5 continent models and it comes from the old greeks which if you look where they are on the map it kinda makes sense why they came to that conclusion

"Continents are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria."

also similar thing for north and south america which can be considered together as one continent depending on who you're asking

  • Europe = northern shore of Mediterranean

Asia = eastern shore of Mediterranean

Africa = southern shore of Mediterranean

These were then extended outwards as geographical knowledge increased but the basic model was kept

  • Jk I don’t know

  • Center of the world in the ancient days was the eastern Mediterranean. Asia is from where the sun rises, Europe is where the sun sets.

why is north america different than south america

I mean division between Africa and Eurasia / North South America make more sense because they’re only connected by isthmi

Europe and Asia are entirely contiguous

It makes sense still because continental/regional subdivisions (see also: the debate about the boundaries of Eastern/Central/Western/Southern/Northern/Balkan Europe) are based on a mixture of topographical and historical realities, which are then interpreted through the lens of the given culture. For example, in the Iberophone world the official and popular view is that America is one continent with Northern and Southern subcontinents. Neither view is more correct or closer to reality, they’re just different interpretations.
