Hey this is actually one of the smartest articles on Mr. West I’ve seen in a very long time.
So refreshing to read a measured and informed take.
He said he would 5 years ago... & diplos story suggests he thought about it 9 years ago
it's decently articulated and long, but he's got some core presumptions wrong
He wants to help people see the world the way Kanye sees it.
and
“The lesson he taught me was to be yourself,” Segovia said. “Whether people like it or not, that’s the truest thing you can do, is be yourself.” He’s articulating West’s core teaching, which, when embraced in earnest, is exactly the sort of philosophy upon which political movements cannot be built.
what he writes in the 2nd quote is theoretically true, but ye isn't preaching the idea of being individualistic "in earnest" (as the author uses it) and thus so over-individualized that it can't group; he wants individualism that is still capable of coming together. so the writer just writes this to say "here's kanye's idea (which isn't actually kanye's idea, it's kanye's idea i've edited so that it won't work) btw his idea won't work"
these presumptions poison the well to simply reiterate the "kanye narcissistic" narrative as a form of dismissal, and other than that this piece tries to just hint at the idea of "kanye secret republican".
If he has had a consistent message in the past four years, it’s that Black people should not vote for Democrats in the overwhelming numbers that they have historically. The party of Biden and Barack Obama, he’s said over and over, has a “plantation” mentality and hasn’t delivered on promises of racial justice. Yet to assume that Black people will flock to West is to assume that Black people are as unthinking as West claims Black Democrats to be.
this wasn't his consistent message cus ye isn't tryn to say "black people shouldn't vote democrat", he says that black people shouldn't be expected to automatically and pretty much permanently align themselves with democrats' ideas b/c doing so can silo them both in their community and at large in america's. he probably does think that black people shouldn't vote for democrats as they had in the past, but that isn't his point re: black people and democrats. it's that black people should have the freedom to decide if the party they're aligned to is actually representing them and to act upon that decision, and currently that freedom is somewhat denied because of social pressure, mainly
also, ye isn't assuming that black ppl will flock to him just cus he's black. the piece doesn't explicitly state it's ye's assumption, so it has that plausible deniability, but the association makes that last sentence's inclusion questionable
But in the place of many true believers, he has hacks sympathetic to Trump.
and this is just typical "i do not like, i will discredit" rhetoric
it's a decent piece. i got more nitpicks, but this attempt is still charged
