When they claimed they’ll launch their own money to replace the dollar and trump threatened a 400% tariff if they did that and they caved

Mind you at the time 400% tariff was seen as comically high and not just another tuesday

Trump bricked the brics. And realistically China, Russia and India in one team was never gonna work out. At least until China and India don't solve their issues on a part of Kashmir region

  • Brics is something some Goldman Sachs economist came up with 20 years ago, s*** is not actually something serious, most of the countries in it hate each other.

What’s there to talk about tho? They meet once a year and otherwise its just normal diplomacy. China and Brazil are closer than ever (Lula was just in Beijing), Russia just hosted Xi and Lula for Victory Day and Indonesia joined as a full member a few months back.

It’s a loose grouping of emerging economies who share similar gripes but have no major commitments. It’s not institutionalized like G7 nor a formal alliance structure. Absolutely no military component and a limited set of economic tools. They have a payment mechanism being built to facilitate trade in local currencies but that’s not ready yet

I think there’s simply too much turbulence in 2025 especially for some of these countries (China) to make rash decisions. They’re just gonna wait out Western self-sabotage while pushing back when forced to (ex. tariffs). BRICS is just a good mechanism to inch toward a day when maybe we have multi polarity or current system collapses

They were never doing this it’s just something that’s hyped to the point President got wind of that idea and freaked out

They’re creating basically an alternative to SWIFT payment system that can be used with their local currencies. Russia being sanctioned out of the USD and SWIFT basically forced this idea into existence and now dozens of developing nations want in. If you can do it to them you can do it to anyone

All they do is aura farming and territorial dispute and spreading false rumors just so the saudis can negociate deals with the US. But tbf that’s the norm

My biggest thing is how do countries with vastly different political interests form a coalition? Their not like the US and most european countries that are all tied together in imperialist exploitation. If one brics country goes to war with another wouldnt that blow the plan up? Genuine question

It's a coalition of mutual grievances against hegemony, not aligned ideologies. I think it intentionally being this helps its survive in the long term. Things like tariffs, sanctions, current Trump admin attacks against South Africa, etc... highlight that they need to at least have some level of coordination. They just can't be too loud about it

Whenever ones in conflict the others usually help. When Russia's in economic war with West, China and India helped. When Iran's been in struggle with West, China and Russia usually help. When China faces 145% rates and needs alternatives for food, Brazil and Russia are there. It goes on and on.

I personally don't think they'd fall into war with each other. India-China have had tensions but both signaled the last year intent to deescalate and are still large trading partners. India talks a lot but just got hit hard against 4th generation Chinese fighters flown by Pakistan. They couldn't go up against China and would be unreliable in U.S. efforts against China

U.S. planners always saw mutual grievance coalitions being dangerous:

The most dangerous scenario would be a grand coalition of China, Russia and perhaps Iran, an ‘anti-hegemonic’ coalition, united not by ideology but by complementary grievances." - Brzezinski

right, China's role globally might be more ambiguous but towards Cuba and the DPRK they play an insidious role in pushing "market socialist" revisionism. I'm not worried about the DPRK since they've emerged from the past 5 years stronger than ever (this is worthy of real study btw) but Cuba faces one crisis after another due to the after effects of the pandemic. self-sufficiency, as always, is the only solution.
