So Eggers made 3 films (going off the initial Nosferatu reactions) that everybody seems to love and put on a pedestal in contemporary cinema. And it’s well deserved don’t get me wrong, but The Northman was the most FUN i had while watching an Eggers in the cinema, but yet it’s the one a lot of people seem to think is just average. So i guess this thread is moreso aimed at that group of people.
Why do you not rate it as highly? Is it because it’s less arthouse than the others? For me the atmosphere was still there, the worldbuilding was cool and just the right amount for what it was trying to do, some cool surreal moments and the action scenes were some great fun
The VVitch still his best though, but i’d probably put Northman second. I love Paterson & Dafoe in the Lighthouse and the cosmic horror aspect was intruiging but it’s not as visceral for me as the VVitch and not as fun for me as The Northman. Still one of the better films of it’s respective year tho
Two very different expectations by two very different groups of movie goers led to a generally lukewarm response imo
The film snobs wanted something with less mainstream sensibility/ what may have felt like studio compromises to them which is hilarious bc that s*** is still nothing like any other film of a similar ilk
The average movie goer wanted something more action packed and less heady/ artsy. Especially concerning the ending. I don’t think Eggers is built for studio filmmaking in the way your average not super into films type enjoys
The latter is why the film made no money. I remember people walking out at the end deadass being like “what the f*** was that, what was the stupid ending”. For what it’s worth I really liked it but I have not been compelled to see it since it came out

Actually makes sense tbh, it didn’t fully lean into either audience’s expectations and preferences
Glad i could thorougly enjoy this and felt like it was balanced pretty well
It was good but just a little too predictable, story a little too familiar. The tree of life and Bjork witch stuff were amazing.
His physicality is insane but otherwise I'm not really sold on Skarsgard. Feel like I can always see through his performances. Doesn't have a captivating interiority. The actor that plays his evil uncle didn't really work for me either.
Also Nicole Kidmans face is distracting and kinda kills the immersion. The sets and costumes are so believably period but then you have her giant horrifying face with iffy 2020s plastic surgery choices all over the place.
Might give it a re-watch rn though.

Ive only seen it once in the cinema when it just dropped so i can’t really get into your points but all i remember is that me and my gf had a great ass time and that the vibes were there for us.
Eggers’ other films are really contained and i do remember really appreciating how this entry felt like it had a larger world besides those contained locations he did before and that he managed to pull that off pretty smoothly
I’ve seen it twice and was entertained both times. Plot is a typical revenge story but I think the rest of the movie’s components make up for it imo

I like me a revenge movie
It’s one of my favorite movies ever. Like an epic Norse myth playing out onscreen. Raw as hell. I think it’s just one of those that some will really resonate with & for others they just won’t click with it.
I like it but I’m much more drawn to the characters in The Witch and The Lighthouse
And hopefully Nosferatu I’m about to see
Mid film and boringly unadventurous with its story, especially when you consider that this is the same guy who made The VVitch. Plus it's one note as hell

You pretty much summed it up for me
