Nah this is try hard af, even by performance art standards. Marina Abramović she is not.

Atmosphere is exactly what it's for, to me anyway — it's great to play at a medium volume when I'm working on things or doing stuff around my house. It also tends to soothe bad headaches for me, as do Eno's *Music for ..." series (just depends on which of the two I'm in the mood for). It's just great zone out stuff that's also calming to me.

It's also really similar to some of his more noisier regular music, particularly the song "Like a Possum", which is one of my favorites (also on my favorite album of his).

Another thing some people enjoy/appreciate it for is the technical side of how the music was composed, and it's major contribution to the whole Noise genre. You can appreciate the significance of something while not enjoying it casually.

Look at popular Noise artists like Merzbow who has released tons of work and has a dedicated following. Or look at the entire earlier genre of Misique Concrete.

When I say "casual enjoyment/entertainment", I'm talking about the difference between the way people generally enjoy things vs the more niche kinds of satisfaction. There's a difference in how people enjoy things, like: upbeat pop music with catchy melodies and hooks, conscious hip hop music, and noise or ambient music. I don't put on Metal Machine Music for the same reason I put on an album by Future or Madonna. That doesn't make it a bad album, or that people who enjoy it must be making excuses because of blind idol worship.
