  • there is a lyric on Carti's single "H00DBYAIR" (later titled HBA on the LP) that gives me a wild comparison but bear with me:
    Carti says
"I was seventeen on the mic
I'm tryna be Carti, not Mike"

While I think it will be considered by his fans to be a great album, the impact of WLR on the size of his audience is not something that this album will do for him, despite the features from people like Lil Uzi Vert, Future, Skepta, even 3 Kendrick features. BUT I think it will be appreciated in the same way MJ's Thriller was followed up by the sprawling world of the Dangerous LP. Dangerous didn't have the monster success of Thriller, but it was still very successful and beloved. To me, it also had the approach of taking the old and blending with the new. Dangerous was MJ's way of blending his old R&B sound with the prevailing trends in Pop music, alongside using expansive string sections and bold industrial sounds.

However, Michael also in a sense rejected the new technology of the time, and was adamant on the use of vintage tape recorders over digital, creating synthesizer sounds from scratch and not using pre-made ones, and using flairs like scatting, beat-boxing, and his own finger-snap syncopation to put his personality into each track.

Additionally, Dangerous was the first album where MJ wasn't produced by longtime mentor Quincy Jones, instead choosing to forge new ground with New Jack Swing pioneer Teddy Riley. In the same way, MUSIC is Playboi Carti's first album without any input from his previous go-to producer and collaborative partner Pi'erre Bourne, whose production of his breakout track "Magnolia" and overall input on his first 2 studio albums "Playboi Carti" and "Die Lit" undoubtedly played a major role in Carti's early success.

I feel like MUSIC was Carti tapping in to the old Atlanta trap sound and mixing it with the rage production. some of the flows and the samples on here especially just SCREAM 2000s and early 2010s ATL Trap. SpaceGhostPurpp is from Florida but he was also an influence on Carti's sound, as evidenced by an early tweet and Carti's sample of "F Taylor Gang" on the track "CRANK".

But back to Atlanta, the MUSIC album samples Sydney by Bankroll Fresh, Bottom of the Map by Jeezy, and Bend Over by Rich Kidz. It also has DJ Swamp Izzo doing drops all over the album, a clear nod to the 2000s Mixtape culture. As much as the songs on here might not break the sonic boundaries, I feel like the majority of the album is really an aggressive and more 808 heavy version of the 2000s Atlanta trap that molded Carti into who he is. While it does remind us of his influence on the rage sound, it also shows that Carti respects the OGs who came before him and aspires to have that same level of impact on the artists that are gonna come after him.

  • @FBI Let him cook.

wish we got a NAV verse on here tbh

Carti and NAV have never missed

  • Die Lit is Off The Wall

Self-Titled is the projects that fans consider as non cannon AKA... that period where MJ left the Jackson 5 and pursued a solo career before the introduction of Quincy Jones RIP.
