Just a general rule that should apply regardless of gender. If you ask somebody out on a date, you should pay for it, since you are the one asking for their time. Unless they say they are fine with paying for their own portion. Buncha other things they could be doing besides going on a date and spending money. I don't know, I just look at it from a common courtesy perspective, not really a gender norm one.
