I recently started working at a new healthcare company, and I’m currently the only male in an all-female office. I’ve been putting in serious effort — double-checking my documentation, catching errors, and going above and beyond. I’ve been proud of the progress I’m making.

But today, something rubbed me the wrong way, today my supervisor said, “You might be sharper than I thought,” and smiled like it was funny.

That caught me off guard. I didn’t know how to take it, it felt less like praise and more like a backhanded acknowledgment that I had exceeded low expectations. This is the same workplace where we can’t even use direct deposit because of the company’s past issues with writing bad checks, and I’ve been given outdated, inaccurate documents since day one. So to hear subtle digs like that is crazy. Am I overreacting to considering quitting?
