This however does not mean that the current way of life that's lived in the West is sustainable. The top 10% richest of the world is responsible for 50% of of the world's emissions, and that includes most of the people on this site. But I am hopeful that much of that can be reduces by the way things are produced, and not just by reducing consumption.

But of course class - and more specifically imperialism - can't be left out of the conversation when it comes who is responsible for the destruction of our environment.

Good bait but those people would still just be a symptom of the bigger problem at hand, not the source

yuh like i still try to be environmentally friendly in my life (and yes i still eat meat products, don’t @ me plants)

but i won’t be guilted by the rich and corporations as if my carbon footprint is the one that needs the most reduction

You right. In the end those people should know themselves how much emissions they cause. If you fly across the world 5 times a year then thats when we got a problem

    Lot of hypocrisy in here

if anyone read the article you would have seen

"The richest 10% of the global population, comprising about 630 million people, were responsible for about 52% of global emissions over the 25-year period, the study showed.

Globally, the richest 10% are those with incomes above about $35,000 (£27,000) a year, and the richest 1% are people earning more than about $100,000."

I bet 90% of the people or their parents on this site are in that 10%. And if you aren't?

All of it is bad but this is pot calling the kettle black

  • Sep 23, 2020

    1% we in here

  • Sep 23, 2020

"The richest 10 percent accounted for over half (52 percent) of the emissions added to the atmosphere between 1990 and 2015. The richest one percent were responsible for 15 percent of emissions during this time – more than all the citizens of the EU and more than twice that of the poorest half of humanity (7 percent)."

"Annual emissions grew by 60 percent between 1990 and 2015. The richest 5 percent were responsible for over a third (37 percent) of this growth. The total increase in emissions of the richest one percent was three times more than that of the poorest 50 percent."

"The poorest 50 percent of humanity comprised approximately 3.1 billion people on average between 1990 and 2015, the richest 10 percent comprised approx. 630 million people, the richest 5 percent approx. 315 million people, and the richest one percent approximately 63 million people.

In 2015, around half the emissions of the richest 10 percent - people with net income over $38,000 - are linked to citizens in the US and the EU and around a fifth with citizens of China and India. Over a third of the emissions of the richest one percent – people with net income over $109,000 - are linked to citizens in the US, with the next biggest contributions from citizens of the Middle East and China. Net incomes are based on income thresholds for 2015 and represented in $ 2011 PPP (purchasing power parity)."

I work full time and don't make 35 000 dollars a year, idk about the rest but I think its a reach saying most ppl here is in the 10%.

now I got a good excuse for not recycling, only thing I do is use a backpack for grocery shopping and public transport

I know people that get in their cars and drive miles somewhere to eat at least once daily, one of the nastiest things I can think of.

China has double the CO2 emissions of the US and combined they're more than the rest of the top 20 combined.

China needs to slow down and the US needs to continue to reduce waste and emissions. I feel like I do a good amount in my daily life reduce my footprint (i work from home, grow some of my own produce, reusable bags when shopping, walk to places a ton) it doesn't feel like enough it's weird I hope everyone is taking this seriously
