It's true, there is a big issue with remasters generally being worse than the original, a lot because of The Loudness War or just to serve the purpose of getting a shiny sticker on a product. There are some artisan engineers out there that are doing amazing things too though

I remastered the original CD using the white label promo clean album as well as vinyl singles for reference as these were sourced from earlier masters and have a more natual sounding EQ. The album was mastered from cassette and has a veiled sound in general. There was a japanese remastered CD but it wasn't done well, very loud with clipping.
the artwork is also restored to what the original LP looked like

I've seen RZA and the members mention RZA losing hundreds of beats in 2 separate floods but never heard anything about this and I consider myself one of the biggest fans.
Not that I'm doubting you but could you provide a source?

"Enter the 36" was done at Firehouse Studios which was on 28th Street. It was mixed by Carlos Bess."

Maybe RZA lost the masters after the album released?

So there's a few things I conflated; that it's mastered from cassette, that the white label promo LP and original singles both sound a lot better and not as veiled as the album (which leads me to believe they are from earlier and better tapes), and those infamous flood stories.
I do prefer the mastering on the WLPs and singles and I do think the album benefits from a bit less veiled of a sound so I can't say that it was all in vain, for me at least.
