I think it was a humourous reference to what the cameraman/director character in the movie said 'im going to edit this in a avant garde way like they do in France, it's a great way to disguise the low budget aspect' something like that

I also saw an article where it said " Ti West said that he tried to evoke a different era in filmmaking—the old Hollywood age—in Pearl, which he has already finished editing"

So I guess X sort of evokes the French New Wave style of filmmaking
