We need labels so that we can easily identify things.

Can't call everyone 'singer/songwriter', do Ed Sheeran or Bowie sound like Frank?

I would say Weeknd has been pop since Starboy. I make that classification because of the more repetitive, shorter songs. Weeknd has been sticking in that 3-4 minute range, with a pre-chorus, chorus, and short verses. Pretty simple and familiar musically as well. If you compare that with his earlier stuff, you're looking at 4-6 minute lengths with long verses and chord progressions that don't resolve, abrupt changes in the music, and s*** like that.

nah bro it cant be pop, pop only stands for popular music it totally isnt its own genre

I don’t really think this is indicative of any genre whatsoever. House of Balloons is a formulaic pop album but people don’t want to have that convo

My point was that it's definitely not something that's common in pop music. House of Balloons is in no way a formulaic pop album. Having 30 seconds of random, atmospheric noise is not indicative of pop music. Half the songs Jesus, Loft Music is one 6 minute long verse. How is that formulaic pop music?

Because it follows a formula. I broke it down about a year ago. Sure there are some breaks in form but overall pretty much every song is structured in typical pop song format.

There are only a few basic song structures and pop music uses all of them, but hip hop, r&b, rock, country, etc. also use the same formats for songwriting, especially anything that's popular. It's not pop song format, it's modern songwriting formula in general

I have to agree with frank painters can have more than 1 style without being pigeonholed into 1 category (modernist, cubist classical, surreal etc) why can’t musicians?

Thx for sharing @op, remember this. Extremely interesting interview and aged really well

Def know what he's talking about with Novacane being more hip hop than RnB. Frank in particular to me always seemed to transcend RnB and with Blonde I honestly always found it weird that it's tagged RnB on rym since like yea the influence is still there but it's rly a pop album first and foremost.

But also def see undertones of what others itt criticize that "being RnB" is a closed rather than open category, which I also def kinda disagree with.

I guess what Frank talks about you could call "genre purism" or something, agree that that's falling out of fashion hard and it's actually a pretty interesting time for music right now for it.

Still dont think theyre obsolete labels at all, especially just to look at the history of a genre and seeing how one builds on top of what came before.

nah artists definitely get pigeonholed (in press/media and in their pocket) depending on reception of work outside of what they"re known for isn't strong amongst art going public, critics, and the collector base.

Even those categories you listed are kinda the product of historicization that allows things to be omitted and streamlined to make an easier art history

I wonder if Frank is gonna work with Slauson Malone ever since he mentions his father in this interview
