This s***’s giving me a headache frfr lol
I think the “‘mixtape” will be their music they promote via IG which will in turn market their album which will be sold and promoted traditionally. Doechii, Schoolboy, and even Tyler been going HARD on IG story posts lmao
its more of a 'deal-conditions' thing but i do appreciate the effort of low-stakes releases to just focus in on the fans needs + artist output
With streaming, there is 0 difference between a mixtape and an album anymore, been that way for 10 years
If someone was brave enough to legit put music out for free just for the strength of promoting themselves like back in the day, that would differentiate themselves from the rest imo. But due to sample issues & the ability to stream, why would they?
I mean just to differentiate the feel I guess? But streaming era blurred that line for good. The youngins that grow up now won't know how Datpiff was thee place for tapes and was special for that distinction.
i miss downloading the under achievers or w/e off datpiff
That’s because that’s how they was judged. Literally before 2009 all mixtapes were advertisements/rappers just spazzing on other niggas beats mostly and just no concept no nothing at all.
In the casw of rappers like joe budden Who had label issues it was their way of still making of living.
It wasnt til 2009+ that the lines began being blurred and niggas made they mixtapes sound like albums and albums like mixtapes.
Future’s whole 3peat of mixtapes really coulda just been albums tbh.
hard to define a mixtape in 2024 cause it seems like now it’s just whatever the artist says it is

but chromakopia is an album?
but chromakopia is an album?
I was just using it as an example of IG being the new battleground

Acid rap definitely coulda been an album.
The 2010s being the wild west kinda f***ed a lot of s*** up in the future, if we knew the ramifications maybe some things go differently.
Return of 4eva, friday night lights, etc were supposed to be these niggas debut albums man lol

for most independent artists putting it up on streaming is basically for free
Putting a "mixtape" on streaming today means you still have to go through all of the clearances, contracts, splits, etc.. as an album. Then it shows on streaming and itunes just like any album. There's virtually no difference besides the artist proclaiming its a mixtape
Very different scenario than freely making a project and uploading for free on a platform like Datpiff without legal headaches
but chromakopia is an album?
Yes.
Call me if you get lost is the “mixtape” of tyler’s discography he literally rapping over a Gravediggas beat and got dj drama talking on it

Samples, samples, samples. Can’t clear but have to release, so mixtapes that are really albums

Besides everybody’s something and maybe lost, the best songs on there had all original production (intro and outro, paranoia, cocoa butter kisses, etc.) if I recall correctly
Yes.

idk tyler that well tbf
Good Kid Maad City is Kendrick’s 4th album
I always thought section.80 was the debut.
Both heart 1 and 2 are both raps over other niggas beats

8 out of 14 songs have a sample that woulda needed to be cleared

He said “how you drop an album and call it an EP” and they consider OD an album too. But for official sakes, S80 is his debut 🙄

Damn
I stand corrected

I did think that was fly

It’s really sad tho. Man ima find that interview I was watching. But essentially the “double album” was another way the labels used to finesse artists before the mixtape. Where you make 2 albums, and they package it as one, but on your contract it only counts as one
