this has been removed nowadays but this was the actual rapgenius explanation while this song was new and popular:

"(ball so hard) that s*** cray" - Watch The Throne

"The origin of the term “Cray” from the “Paris” single off Jay-Z and Kanye West’ “Watch the Throne” album is actually not a shortened form of the word “crazy”, nor is it “cray”, it’s actually “Kray”. It’s in reference to the schizophrenic twins Ronald and Reginald Kray… The Kray twins who were the crime lords in London in the 50's and 60's… The police failed to locate them on numerous occasions, which is where the line “ball so hard, muthafuckas wanna find me, that s*** Kray. That s*** Kray. That s*** Kray”."

now they barely explain any lines anymore

I remember how betrayed (not really but ehh) I felt the first time i realized they do “just lyrics” as often as if not more than annotations. Then they became the top google for lyrics so it was just whatever.

  • Need a new annotation lyric site cuz they not cutting it anymore

I truly think it’s a chicken or the egg situation on top of it being a meme within a meme. J Cole’s career arc is an interesting case study

    Let’s annotate American Tterrorist 😄

  • Bhri555

S***s been on my mind the last couple days because it’s lowkey crazy to see how far the site/app as a whole has come since just becoming Genius

One in particular that was truly was Kendrick’s “She eyeing me like a nigga don’t exist” bar on f***ing problems they said mans was talking about one of Mars’ moons, named i, that was declared to have never existed or something

I know there’s plenty more examples of crazy reaches/explanations but this the only one that’s vividly popping up in my memory rn. Y’all got any ?

lmaoooo nah i remember they said it was because “i” in math is the imaginary number

I figured that but there has (had?) to be some kinda merit system to determine which annotation gets displayed first right? Meaning these crazy ones were winning out more often than not

If you been editing a long time you can pick peoples edits to add. Its a weird system.

i thought it was just first come first serve cuz it only shows one annotation unless there’s also a verified one

searching the lyrics to Parade - Tyler introduced me to rapgenius and I swear I thought Tyler was the most calculated genius rapper out. Until he finally cleared it up that most of the explanations were a reach.
