She bullying my dihluxe 😈
Took an extremely cursory glance at the Susan Sontag stuff you mentioned, and I agree with the general premise. I guess I see it like this: If someone who's not a mega-stan and has no idea about the AI s*** listens to standard bully This One Here and thinks it's the most beautiful thing in the world, that's awesome, and I don't wanna take that from them. But within the sphere of mega ye nerds who know what it really is, it just kinda takes the punch out of it before it even has the opportunity to give you chills.
You bring up an interesting point by mentioning the fact that 30 real versions of a released AI song could surface. Would the time put into it make it "real art" even if he decides to go with a "fake" version? Personally, I still think it's a bit of an submission, or an admission of defeat. "The robot can do it better than me, no matter how much I work on it".
I think that makes another point about the maga Ye nerds stans (I can't say I'm not one) and stans in general, that we see too much behind the scenes and too much of how the sausage is made, and it clouds all sense of taking something for what it is
It's like when stans of Star Wars or other big franchises decide what a movie should be before they watch it and get disappointed when it isn't that, it takes the punch out of it before it has the opportunity to amaze you, and I don't think that's inherently George Lucas' fault (I haven't watched a Star Wars movie in 10 years so idk who does what anymore) like I don't think it's Ye's fault
The biggest stans of artists that know the most about them are very rarely the people that love what the artists make the most, and they're often the loudest haters when the moment comes
I always respect that David Lynch insists on not doing voice over commentary for his movies and doesn't explain any plot points or any meaning of the movie, the movie is the experience, knowing why something is the way it is doesn't help you feel the movie better it just means you can tick off x's and o's on a made up rubric
It begs more questions: Is a dirty mix "better" than a clean one? Are real vocals inherently "better" than AI? Is anything in art "better" than something else? Is art a contest or expression?
Perhaps the Ye-I example is not 1:1 to my point, but I do think the fact he recorded clear sounding real versions and went back to AI ones (that also objectively sound more spaced out and off-kilter) at least shows there's something to be said about it that makes it different from whatever AI songs are charting (I haven't heard any of the big ones from the charts) where they try to make it perfectly clean and neat and point blank steal other peoples work
This is his 17th classique.
