Meh disagree. Hes a very talented rapper though not much more than someone like a Denzel Curry or Vince Staples or Larry June as far as modern rappers go. And he has a very generic and boring artistic/beat selection. TPAB is great though supremely overrated and the rest of his albums generally suffer from middling production in big stretches as well as being too conceptual to where a number of the songs are just not interesting to hear beyond a few listens. As a writer, he’s also just extremely direct while masquerading as something complex which is why a lot of his music tends to not age well. I can listen to Put You on Game by Lupe or Da Art of Storytelling by Andre and still pick up on super cool details because there are so many interesting aspects to them. But a song like Sing About Me where the coolest detail arguably is Kendrick dimming his voice in the 2nd verse to reflect the fading away of that character is just such an obvious songwriting decision and that’s just how I can describe a lot of his stuff. It sounds deep the first couple times you hear it but once you figure it out, you realize there isn’t anything more underneath it.
