The Big 3 is definitely not just commericially. It's a combination of that and quality. It's the rappers with the overall package. Basically the mainstream rappers with the most skills. The rappers who are balanced in every aspect of being a rapper. Drake has definitely not surpassed Cole and Kendrick they still the Big 3 and if you had to rank them Kendrick definitely number 1.

Lmao. The guy who doesn’t release anything for 4 years literally can’t be 1

What does it matter if he hasn't? He's got a strong enough catalogue to back it up still. It didn't magically go away.

When you put it like that Drake is obviously the complete package, that's why he has so much commercial appeal. I try to look at it objectively and the numbers show us Drake is number 1. My personal opinion is Drake also has the best quality overall but you're free to feel differently because that's our opinions.

I am saying all 3 of them are the complete package. Which is why they the Big 3. Drake might get them in the popularity aspect but Kendrick for sure has them in quality. Numbers aren't everything. Obviously when it comes to that Drake is number 1 but this is Hip Hop and when you talking about this, your skills as an MC are just as important as how much you sell.

That's why the conversation of who is the next Big 3 after them is so hard to determine right now because sure there are a lot of rappers that may have success numbers-wise like Roddy, Dababy, Lil Baby, Juice (RIP), etc but they don't rap as well as they sell. They ain't the complete package like Cole, Kendrick and Drake are or how Jay-Z, Kanye and Em/Wayne were.

Consistency matters. Kendrick doesn’t provide era defining moments and the consensus usually has him as the odd one out when asked to pick out of the ‘Big 3’

I’m sure you’ve seen all the videos over the years where they ask athletes (nba players, nfl players, etc.) that ‘one gotta go’. It’s always Kendrick.

If we talking about skill as an MC in hip-hop Drake, Kendrick and Cole aren't even in the top 5 but they're just some of the most well known because they all make easily accessible music. The quality is subjective and skill is even between the 3 (even Cole has his moments). It just makes the most sense to go by stats, hip-hop has always been sport like in the regard.

Million dollar question here is : what even started the K Dot x Drake Beef ? 🧐

  • Apr 2, 2021

Even though most of us (besides the drake haters that enter and comment BS to piss us off ) we all know drake is the goat. Regardless that were all drake stans. Statistically, who’s been in the game as long as drake and who’s been able to stay as consistent as drake ? No one. The man drops 1x a year. He stays consistent. 1x a year, regardless if it’s a care package from songs that came out in 2010 or 2012... the man releases SOMETHING 1x a year. Most rappers can’t even do that ! I rest my cast your honor (slams gavel)

You know this is true because only one of them gets their threads automatically moved while the other two get a free pass.

Million dollar question here is : what even started the K Dot x Drake Beef ? 🧐

It started with their initial meeting in Toronto. After Drake heard Section .80 he hit up Kendrick and invited him to Toronto to meet and discuss music. From that meeting Kendrick was jealous of Drake’s meteoric success at such a young age (they’re the same age). Kendrick raps about this on the Buried Alive interlude from Take Care. I was always interested in the reason Drake kept that interlude, because Kendrick is clearly envious all over it. Nevertheless, it’s an amazing song.

Although Kendrick was jealous, Drake still showed love and appeared on Poetic Justice the following year from Kendrick’s project, GKMC. Drake also put Kendrick on tour with him. There isn’t much to speculate here. The relationship was probably at a high. Kendrick was finally happy to get his debut out and it sold 240k record fist week. Huge.

Now, things get murky. In the follow up to GKMD Kendrick’s ego has taken the best of him. His guest verses are a bit more arrogant and people are hailing as the new Pac. All of this comes to a fore during the summer of 2013 when Big Sean drops a record that couldn’t get cleared for his album. That song is Control. We all know what Kendrick said on there. Different artists responded in different ways. Some tweeted Kendrick back, others made songs, and some ignored him. The following month in September Drake was asked about the verse during a CRWN interview. Although Drake kind of dismissed the song he credited the songs shock value. However, he questioned the audience, he asked “does anyone know how the verse starts?”. In short, he was referring to the memorability of the verse. Check.

Nevertheless, Kendrick’s attack on the rap game and Drake in particular continued the following month in October during the BET cypher. The Black Hippy cypher was highly anticipated and people were curious if Kendrick would double down on the theme of his Control verse. That theme being rap game ascendency. Of course, Kendrick does double down and is allegedly referring to Drake when he raps about putting a sentence rapper back in his pajama clothes. Another line was more important for me though. It was the one when he raps “I got my thumb on Hip Hop, and my foot in the back of your ass, Aftermath gets the last laugh”. Despite the rough history and trials of Aftermath records, most notably with the death of Tupac, Kendrick that asserts their reign, and west coast’s in general, will return.

Ever since this verse the two have been sending subs in a number of records we can discuss. I don’t think the rivalry is over per say. We’re definitely in Cold War territory. As for the people saying Kendrick’s 4 year hiatus puts him out of the big three and he can’t reach Drake, I agree, but there’s more to consider. In 2015, when Kendrick and Cole dropped Black Friday Kendrick raps “you’re racing against the tortoise, pace myself its important, lace myself with the wisdom my playerism’s enormous.” We all should know about the story of the tortoise and hare from Aesop’s Fables. The story is well over 1000 years old. In short, while the hare looks like he’s going to win, he takes a nap mid race, and awakens to the tortoise well past him and at the finish line.

Although Drake is not the type of artist to take breaks Kendrick’s slow and steady approach lately shouldn’t be confused with complacency or fatigue. I think its better to assume he has something planned. He most likely still thinks he’s the King.
