For a guy who, on first glance, seems like a generic west coast gangsta rapper out of central casting
My (Hitta) came out in September 2013, he played Go Loko on Ellen with Tyga, Jon Z and a mariachi band in May 2019
He got a lot of mileage out of an aesthetic that could have been perceived as already played out
I was always glad to hear him spit 16 on a radio song
Not that commercial performance is everything but we think he’s gonna have another album or feature that’s popping, or is he settling into his late career?
Also is YG’s last hit being Go Loko symbolic of Compton becoming a majority Mexican city? Food for thought
He had a very good run although I think the current California sound landscape has passed him up
And that’s not a bad thing, just a lot of new and creative sounds coming out of that state.
I think his alcoholic addiction slowed him down with his creative output but never says never. Look at big Sean hopping on with Detroit rappers and sounding as fresh as ever (that cut with Babyface ray)

Tbh I haven’t been keeping up on new west coast s*** the past couple years, what should I check out?

As of late I’ve been stuck on BlueBucksClan, I’m sure a native can give you better reccomendations but BlueBucksClan, Ohgeesy, Ralfy the plug, AFN Peso have all been getting some burn from me
so Toot It N Boot It not mainstream anymore? Snitches Ain’t doesn’t exist?
Add that to the start then, it only makes my point stronger
my krazy life & still brazy both classic but 4real 4real underrated as hell
I was surprised how good it was considering the album before was a weed plate
In addition to the songs that straight up go hard, In the Dark always sounded to me like a song from a Broadway musical about Hip-Hop, but somehow not in a corny way

Keisha Had A Baby is a good song because you wouldn’t expect the straightforward sound or concept from YG especially given the rest of the album
