I don’t wanna hear it. Either artists are allowed to explore and knowledge themselves on other cultures or they need to stay inside of their own city and never venture out. That’s the exact logic yall spitting when it comes to Drake.

Contrary to the talking points yall use with Drake

    1. He never “pretended” to be from anywhere and has always said he grew up in Toronto
    2. He always has given credit to artists from other cultures, worked with them mutually, and they had no issue

drake made millions with all these niggas and pushed them to new heights

even degenrates would let kendrick paint them this situation as a colonizer taking advantage of slaves.

kendrick has rapped a bunch of bs, but this might be up there.
niggas just bumping to this "real nigga challenge", just proves how slow we as a culture can be

hate amongs brothers will trump everything, even common sense

Also if you the same user who support Beyonce going from R&B to Pop to Dance to Country to Rock to Latin collabs to a Trap-Rap persona where she also raps “don’t make me get up out my seat” and “whole lot of gangin” please do not sit here talking about Drake needs to be authentic to his roots with his artistry

if Drake simply spoke "proper" and didn't condemn slang/the way his peers talked to look more cultured in front of his stuffy peers, no one would have anything to say man, that's not why people pull up that video and you know it for a fact

trying to paint that video as "well, doesn't everyone code switch in front of their friends?" after @insertcoolnamehere blatantly pointed out to you that code-switching doesn't connote s***ting on a manner of speaking is exactly implicative of what im saying you're doing

just say it's weird and move on, there's no need to flip it

no... that's not what people are criticizing him for or s***ting on him for at all. they're criticizing him for getting on these subgenres in these different cultures, using their accent and slang and retrofitting it to his entire sound palate for future releases like he's Ben 10 shapeshifting whenever he feels like it

that's fundamentally different than taking inspiration from sounds from other music around the world and incorporating it into your own. i already said in a previous thread similar to this one (ktt2.com/can-we-discuss-the-closing-angle-diss-in-not-like-us-32571299) that i don't look at music as a "region-locked" thing where you can only explore the sound in the city/culture that you grew up in. the issue is the way he goes about it

and the a***ogy falls apart anyways because Kendrick is black and did TPAB a whole pro-black album filled with legendary black musicians behind the boards after reconnecting to his roots in Africa, visiting Mandela's cell etc. The Black Panther album was a very obvious thing to do

Midrick called Drake up in 2011 when he wasn't seeing an arena or 100k album sales

Then called Drake up again in 2024 when his last album flopped and singles were getting stale

A full circle moment for the biggest gimmick artist in the world 🫶

Bro’s spitting. You should apply to ghostwrite in the OVO sweatshop

Drake fans are trying to save face by saying "actually, he was successful before all those guys" when Kendrick's point is that Drake's only way to adapt and stay relevant was by becoming an even more blatant culture vulture

Couldn’t you say the same for Kanye

Or is it different because he’s always been seen as a producer first amongst music nerds (ktt included, no need to hide @TroyAveStan )

she has songs scattered across her entire discography that span from all those genres that you just named... she didn't get on those sounds for a check, which is again the key issue that people are crying about on here. Beyonce is literally FROM Texas, she can make an entire country album if she wants to man you don't even make sense

RENAISSANCE was literally made to honor one of her late great family members that was LGBT+

and besides that, i don't like hearing her rap and talk like that anyways, i could dig in the Cowboy Carter thread and literally show you posts about me complaining about it

and authenticity is a smaller facet of this entire thing anyways. it's about using a culture as a stepping stool and then discarding it. her making some s***ty trap music talking about gang banging is nowhere in the same ballpark

like that entire closing verse is really just about cultural appropriation and using things from other cultures as a selling point for your music more than anything else, it's a rehash of what people complained about during his More Life era, he even mentioned this on Euphoria with "There's no accent you can sell me"

he constantly mentions how Drake uses his racial ambiguity as a monkey bar to go from culture to culture using whatever accent and slang that he wants "The skin you're living in is compromised in personas" which is way bigger than just "o my god !! he's saying u have to stick to the same sound that u grew up in regionally !!" it either just shows niggas aren't listening, lack media literacy or are just trolling

maybe all 3 at this point

Midrick called Drake when he needed the career starter stimulus - and then opened up for him on his tour & traded album features with him

there’s fans who like something because it’s popular and then there’s fans who like it because it’s for the culture. Kendrick didn’t need a co-sign from Drake because real hip hop fans heard of Kendrick from the jump or from the Dre/westcoast co-signs. only hypebeasts need Drake to tell them what’s hot

When has Drake ever discarded any of the cultures he worked with?

And just being from a Southern state don’t mean you got Country music roots lmaooo. I don’t even think Beyonce could name her top 10 Country albums (or knew 10 period before this project) but that’s discussion for another day. She got bare minimum experience and knowledge of the genre similar to any outsider not from the South.
