The theory is not simply that the earth is flat and everything else is true. The idea is that the earth is a flat realm with heaven above and hell below and that’s it. (There is no outer space for example) If the flat earth theory was actually true, then the importance of earth and people would be undeniable. They believe that the purpose of the deception is to make us feel meaningless in a vast universe that is simultaneously full of other places like earth but basically empty because there is no way to travel to those places.

their beliefs are rooted in a willful complete ignorance of science and history, so trying to use what we think as simple explanation is totally disregarded

and to go further, what it’s REALLY rooted in is a total alienation/distrust from politics/society

Things suck, politicians say they’ll help, it’s lies, nothing changes. The dissonance causes people to become jaded and question everything, including the fundamental tenants of scientific observation

Healthy, functioning, responsive political societies likely do not incur such disillusioned citizens
