    Africans also

    I attented a lecture on immigration and the statistics showed that the majority of immigrants were of European descent :ie Spanish, polish, British etc immigrating to France...

    They're not socially considered immigrants but rather expats despite legally being immigrants (a person who legally resides in a host country for over a year is legally an immigrant.)

    Furthermore, both (European immigrants and African immigrants) can't be the majority... it's either one then the other...

    It depends on the country

    Only 3 countries have a majority of Africans immigrants
    Spain- Moroccans (=> proximity imo)
    Portugal - angola (=> colonial history)
    France-Algeria (=> colonial history)

    Non European/eurasian immigrants
    Uk- India (=> colonial history)
    Netherlands- turkey( => after ww2, immigrants fro poorer countries were asked to help build back the European economy for minimum wage hard labor, this isn't exclusive to the Netherlands btw)

    still most immigrants are Europeans

    Indians to UK may have colonial ties which may help the following but the main reason now is skilled Labour and that there’s a massive community

    I doubt anyone leaves india to go to England because England rules them 100 years ago.

    And you’re 100% right about Spain

    so who sucks who's culture?

    Chicago juke/footwork had been a thing for years. Juke was the predecessor to footwork (the lines are very blurry tho) and grew out of the Ghetto House scene in the late 90s.

    Anyways, flash forward to like 2010, a a label called Planet Mu, who is highly respected in the international dance music community, releases two excellent compilations of underground Chicago footwork artists called Bangs and Works Vol 1/2. This brought a ton of attention to producers like RP Boo, and prominent musicians in the UK such as Kode9, Ramadanman, and Allison Groove began experimenting with the sound and pushing it in a lot of crazy new directions by combining it with different styles of UK Bass music

    I’m being a bit facetious with the gentrification comment. The UK guys generally did a good job of acknowledging the Chicago pioneers and a lot of the music they made was really great, although it did at times stray a bit far from the original spirit of the genre for my taste. Rashad, Spinn, and RP Boo probably received a lot more attention and success than they would otherwise by remaining a very small, hyperlocal scene which you didn’t really see anywhere outside of Chicago, although there were some very small pockets of it in other Midwest places like Omaha. That being said I don’t think most people that got into through people like Kode9 really understood where it came from and how it developed, and I think it’s safe to say a lot of UK producers received a lot more credit than their Chicago counterparts as OG footwork was unfairly considered to be much more “simple” music and wasn’t seen as being as experimental and polished as the UK stuff. This is objectively incorrect - footwork was already highly experimental and forward thinking, and I think the OGs don’t get enough credit for that compared to their UK counterparts - but you can see how this is another instance of people taking a very raw black genre and polishing it of its rougher edges to find more success, hence why I say gentrified. But like I said, there was certainly a lot of good that came out of this too, as happens with every scene that suddenly blows beyond its very small borders. There’s good and bad. My main point was just another example of the UK taking inspo from the US, particularly Chicago.

    Yeah np I love that music so much. The other thing that kinda got lost with the more “experimental” UK variety was the focus on actual footworking/dancing. That was always a key component of what made it so great, and was just as important as the music in Chicago. Few musical events compare in energy level to footwork battles with different DJs and dancers going back and forth with the craziest beats and moves you’ve ever seen.
