The driving force of the show is shinji's quest to overcome his traumas and become fully realized in who he is. What happened with all the robot battle s*** was pointless because the broader theme of the show is people coming together to accept their own, and each other's flaws and live in harmony. When the instrumentality project happended that was basically the big resolution for this series.
I don't think I'm saying anything new but I'm not watching any of the sequels or remakes because I feel like their forced and we've got out climax already

the movie makes the anime ending even better imo

But why? It just rehashed the same message about humanity coming together with a couple extra action scenes
