i think the additional expecting the other person to know them part is a bit of a stretch, given how many more ppl of recent immigrant heritage live in america now than like 20 or 30 years ago (where there were so few that they were more likely to know each other), but as @Oblivion99 noted in some cities it really is tight-knit like that/still
