Arguably the 2 most ambitious space related films ever
Which one does film section prefer?
I think for me personally i slightly prefer 2001 but i've only seen Interstellar one time so i really need to rewatch that one to be sure
interstellar is more enjoyable imo, maybe because of the emotional aspect which 2001 doesnt really have
2001 is a bit harder to watch for me
but love both for their own thing
while both are very ambitious space related movies, i dont think you can really compare the two as they deal with different themes and are centered around different questions. I guess Solaris vs 2001 might make for a better comparison.

That makes even less sense
At least Nolan and Kubrick were existing in the same universe... Solaris something else entirely.

Oh i didn't knew that. I actually shouldnt even used Solaris as an example cause i havent seen it yet Its just that i read a couple of times that Tarkovsky´didnt liked 2001 and made Solaris as some kind of response. Do you think there is a film that is comparable with 2001?
I didn't really like 2001 but I can admit there's just something special about it, and I can't pinpoint what exactly.
I definitely enjoyed interstellar more though

Yeah, Interstellar. Kubrick just wanted to make "the proverbial sci fi film" which I feel applies to Nolan as well. Both are urgent space faring adventures that are about the experience. Tarkovsky (one of my faves) made a philosophical art film that happens to take place on a space station and it far more of a cerebral thing. always thought 2001 comparisons were dumb.
Disrespectful ass thread. Spitting on kubrik's grave lowkey
"Love is the most powerful resource"

Like comparing the conjuring to shining

Nah interstellar fire but comparing it to 2001 makes it look like trash ngl
2001 birthed interstellar. also the fact it came out in 1968 and doing what it did is insane.
going to one of the 2001 exhibits will make you appreciate it more.
Leaving out influence and impact, Interstellar was a way more affecting and powerful watch
2001 is still a very fascinating watch but I appreciate it more than I actually enjoy it. The camera work, the visuals for its time, how things seem so perfectly paced just feels like precise art that couldnt have been made better. But I also feel Interstellar couldn’t have been done better or by anyone else. Its funny because despite the 2001 comparisons, it excels for doing everything 2001 didn’t do.

I feel like both Interstellar and Solaris ask similar questions about love and relationships against existentialism- they just give different answers. Those films would be decently paired even tho I’m not gonna be the one to do it

This is overreacting if i ever seen it i even said in op i prefer 2001 myself
But lets not act like Interstellar isn't one of the greatest space movies in recent memory
Thought it would make for a good discussion considering a lot of younger people will probably view Interstellar as their absolute classic space movie
