"only leftists like WHO think like this!!" and then you see memes of Obama as an ape by someone who clearly didn't get the memo to pretend for a post that they don't know what they're doing.

My african niggas who went thru ebola era know the name monkeypox would be bound to lead to more racial insults

The only real argument against changing it would be that right wing trolls are gonna make it a point now to use the name monkeypox in racist manner but there's nothing wrong with changing the name in itself

Obv that's not what they're saying lol

The name is called monkeypox because it literally originated from observing outbreaks in monkeys. I have not seen any examples at all about racism regarding the name, the only thing I’ve seen is blatant homophobia saying it’s the new aids and only gay people can get it, which has nothing to do with the name. Changing the name because of the assumption someone will tie it to black people is super weird imo and makes it seem like they themselves can’t not make the association. What they think is a “good faith move” comes off as more racist to me than letting something be disparate

This is the literal logic they’re using

As any other disease, it can occur in any region in the world and afflict anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity,” the group wrote. “As such, we believe that no race or skin complexion should be the face of this disease.”

Like are you telling me when you hear the word monkey your first thought is race????

When I heard an outbreak was coming from a disease that was mostly in Africa first thing that came to mind was all the racism during the ebola outbreak

When I heard it was called monkeypox, yes I thought about how that could be used in racist insults

    Guess I'm a racist now

If they just wanted to say the name is outdated and not reflective of the disease or modern etymology I think that’s fine, albeit the origin of the term had nothing to do with racism regardless

However I think it’s weird af to explicitly say something called “monkey” is tied to “race or skin complexion”.

If u implying that if you're concerned it would be used in a racist manner you rly have no idea what kinda racist shyt Africans got thrown on em during ebola and that was without that name

Idec if you disagree w the name change but insinuating that such a concern makes you racist rly makes no sense and i didn't expect this stupidpol tier take from u tbh

Monkeys are associated with tropical areas

    It came from rats

Rats exist everywhere in the world

    Monkeys don't

Therefore the insinuations of each are different

The virus is named because of where it was first observed in colonies in the wild. If they want to rename it because the naming isn’t accurate I don’t care, but tying it to race is firstly making an issue of out of nothing, and secondly invoke racism which to me makes them seem even more racist or as if that’s why it was named that.

I have not seen a single racist meme about monkeypox in the wild. Literally did not even know it came from Africa. The only thing I’ve seen is homophobic people saying it’s divine punishment against gay people and it’s the new AIDs

I don’t think being concerned with racism makes you racist, I think that it’s backhanded to make assumptions about racism by forcefully reading between the lines to provoke it

It seems like releasing a statement and making a fuss over this will result in more racism and more division than if they had simply said “monkeypox isn’t an accurate name and doesn’t reflect it’s origin so we’re changing it”.

  • Jun 15, 2022

I didn't make that connection, but when the possibility is presented it's probably best to close it. Mfs were making up "Kung Flu" and stuff, this would be a lay up to them.

If u were african in a white mans world during ebola era you would know how wrong you are on this, it's a legit concern

Don't let your politics revolve around how different u are from the libs bro lol

No one is saying racism doesn’t exist I’m saying it’s ridiculous to invoke racism as a matter of self-absolvement which implicates far more racism in the process of doing so

Looking at the comments of that article is a great example of this, had they simply changed the name without doing this, none of the vile s*** there or in QRTs would exist
