i didn't say it makes someone racist, i said it invokes racism. I'm obviously not equating alluding the word monkey to race the same thing as like, practicing actual white supremacy. However I think it's ridiculously backhanded and invokes a racialized discourse which in turn creates a more hostile racist environment - my point being look at the QRTS/replies as I said prior for vile s*** that wouldn't have existed had they not taken this blatant of an angle out of the blue. If they want to change the name for being outdated or misleading, then sure, I don't think that's a bad thing, but like, yeah, I don't think it's wise nor meaningful to use the logic they did of saying the word "monkey" invokes discourse on "skin color or race". Like, yeah, it does - to blatant racists, who tf other than people who are already insanely racist are reading the word "monkey" and thinking "ah, yeah, black people"??? It gives far far more legitimization to actual racism in public discourse because it's not "acknowledging" racism, it's basically throwing a bone over to racists altogether "you have too much power in discourse/language for us to use the word monkey" which is absolutely insane, especially since as I mentioned, the origin of the term had literally no bad faith involved, it was based on its occurrence in colonies of monkeys in the wild.
And no, I don't think the people at WHO are bloodthirsty raging white supremacists, but I do think they're trying too hard to read between the lines in order to absolve themselves within the current environment of where bureaucratic and social norms intersect and in turn have created a situation which will likely inspire more racist s*** than if they had simply changed the name for being out of date without trying to pin "look how grand and virtuous we are for not tying the word monkey to africa". Because to me, no, I don't think that's them being racist, but I think it's backhanded as hell and should be offensive by anyone who complains about these institutions or western norms to do the bare minimum all the while publicizing actual racist fixations that im sure half the population not in europe never would have made the connotation of otherwise.

everything i said is specifically about the context of the WHO, it wasn't meant to be extrapolated to anyone in general who thinks the name should be changed. the entire reason i posted the WHO thing and not some rando talking about the name was for that exact reason. i don't think it's a bad thing if some people want it changed, I don't think the WHO is doing it for or presenting it for the right reasons
