If u were african in a white mans world during ebola era you would know how wrong you are on this, it's a legit concern
Don't let your politics revolve around how different u are from the libs bro lol
I don’t really think this is politics, this has nothing to do with policy
it’s a bureaucratic organization making a decision I think is in poor taste. i’m gonna call a spade a spade if I see it in the wild
No one is saying racism doesn’t exist I’m saying it’s ridiculous to invoke racism as a matter of self-absolvement which implicates far more racism in the process of doing so
Looking at the comments of that article is a great example of this, had they simply changed the name without doing this, none of the vile s*** there or in QRTs would exist

Did you use the ai text gen on this one bc i have no idea what u tryna say here tbh
Idc if u disagree w the name change, but the concerns for that name being used in a racist manner are 100% legitimate

Again u wasnt shooting with me in the gym during ebola if u were u would understand
Krishna u said that making that Association makes u a racist
That's a terrible f***ing takenlmao
U can just say i was tripping and keep it moving instead of starting to talk abt WHO bureaucracy

ebola was wild feel bad for the African kids at my school during that period
ebola was wild feel bad for the African kids at my school during that period
Shyt was terrible
But i guess those kids who are now grown up and thought about how monkeypox could be used in a racist way are now racist for making that association
Bc you're an american
That’s probably what the root of y’all’s disagreement is, I also haven’t seen anyone making racist jokes abt it online or actually even thought about the possible racist connotation of the name even though it’s obvious in retrospect (whereas the commentary on anti-Asian discrimination regarding Covid was inescapable), it’s all gay-centric as he says
But I could believe it’s different between Europeans and Africans
Yeah honestly, I haven't seen monkeypox get used racist online this time around compared to Ebola. It doesn't hurt that the WHO is wanting to address it right now

Being american def a big part of it
My mom thinks it's a good move and she's a first gen Ethiopian immigrant to Europe who was a member of a communist party in Ethiopia during the cold war
I promise you it's not bc she's being a performative liberal
That take is just the result of viewing everything thru the prism of America's current political climate

i didn't say it makes someone racist, i said it invokes racism. I'm obviously not equating alluding the word monkey to race the same thing as like, practicing actual white supremacy. However I think it's ridiculously backhanded and invokes a racialized discourse which in turn creates a more hostile racist environment - my point being look at the QRTS/replies as I said prior for vile s*** that wouldn't have existed had they not taken this blatant of an angle out of the blue. If they want to change the name for being outdated or misleading, then sure, I don't think that's a bad thing, but like, yeah, I don't think it's wise nor meaningful to use the logic they did of saying the word "monkey" invokes discourse on "skin color or race". Like, yeah, it does - to blatant racists, who tf other than people who are already insanely racist are reading the word "monkey" and thinking "ah, yeah, black people"??? It gives far far more legitimization to actual racism in public discourse because it's not "acknowledging" racism, it's basically throwing a bone over to racists altogether "you have too much power in discourse/language for us to use the word monkey" which is absolutely insane, especially since as I mentioned, the origin of the term had literally no bad faith involved, it was based on its occurrence in colonies of monkeys in the wild.
And no, I don't think the people at WHO are bloodthirsty raging white supremacists, but I do think they're trying too hard to read between the lines in order to absolve themselves within the current environment of where bureaucratic and social norms intersect and in turn have created a situation which will likely inspire more racist s*** than if they had simply changed the name for being out of date without trying to pin "look how grand and virtuous we are for not tying the word monkey to africa". Because to me, no, I don't think that's them being racist, but I think it's backhanded as hell and should be offensive by anyone who complains about these institutions or western norms to do the bare minimum all the while publicizing actual racist fixations that im sure half the population not in europe never would have made the connotation of otherwise.
you can believe the name should be changed because it's outdated or has bad etymology, i'm not saying that makes you a performative liberal, i'm saying the WHO isn't doing it for those reasons and you shouldn't act like they are

That's not what u said lol but cool
Changing the name because of the assumption someone will tie it to black people is super weird imo and makes it seem like they themselves can’t not make the association.
This is v different from all that u said above (still disagree but whatever)
That's not what u said lol but cool
everything i said is specifically about the context of the WHO, it wasn't meant to be extrapolated to anyone in general who thinks the name should be changed. the entire reason i posted the WHO thing and not some rando talking about the name was for that exact reason. i don't think it's a bad thing if some people want it changed, I don't think the WHO is doing it for or presenting it for the right reasons

And the name being used in racist attacks is the bad reason I assume lol?

do you think the WHO is renaming it because of europeans being racist
do you think the WHO is renaming it because of europeans being racist
It's not about why the WHO is doing it it's about whether that reason in isolation is valid, and it is
Is WHO being genuine? Probably not, but that's not the disagreement

the original post in the thread and all my posts have been solely about the actions of the WHO, not individuals who genuinely think it should be changed because of worries following behavior w/ COVID or other issues
why do they all follow the playbook
This is the pinnacle of comedy to republicans rn
