https://twitter.com/skepticalspice/status/1467055081300312068i kinda see what she's getting at because even in the thread here on KTT when the shooting happened people were posting that exact pic of him as a little kid and making jokes about how even innocent looking little boys are wild and dangerous and making it a race thing, and if it was like that here, it's probably 100x worse on like twitter. the way she's articulating it though is really stupid. Rising fell off hard after Krystal + Saagar, its surprising the show even exists anymore. K + S's new show Breaking Points is falling off too now because theyre getting really desperate for views + clicks as an independent brand, the last 2 weeks of their stuff is like straight up tabloid clickbait with National Enquirer-level thumbnails

Rising has been baiting rightwingers for awhile now

All the left leaning commentators I used to watch fell off. :(

was originally replying to the first reply you made but makes more sense replying to this one.
it makes sense when you consider just how bad the advertising/attention economy is falling off or changing vs even just several years ago why so many commentators suddenly fell off around the same time.
business models are increasingly changing if thats their full time work (and it usually is), and when it comes to subscription-model businesses, its largely not viable because no one wants to pay for 100 subcriptions to different people editorializing the same content. the only people who succeed on these substack-like models are basically policy types (Ygleisias, Bruenig, ec.) or people who are making entertainment content instead of news content (Jimmy Dore). if you cant survive in that environment, the only real other alternative is to join a network or institute, of which you then need to reflect those views instead of your own too, which is also increasingly the case (i.e. Iverson on Rising/The Hill)

thats pretty much the basis of that entire book they wrote lol

yglesias might be the most insufferable person on twitter tbh, everytime i see his takes retweeted i get heated
bruenigs are funny too cuz liz does everything she can to not articulate her views beyond expanded welfare state

hed be in the running for worst twitter user if Noah Smith didnt exist. Yglesias's shtick is annoying but you can attribute most of his views to his fame far succeeding that of his actual political knowledge; he even basically says this himself that he just does things that "sound good" or "sound fair". people like Noah Smith are actually insufferable all around. still though, its undoubtable people like that who pitch themselves as "policy wonks" or whatever are the ones who have succeeded the most in new business models. there was an estimate Yglesias was bringing in something like $1-2M+ a year on substack on top of Substack's $250k-$500k advance to him.
personally i cant stand Liz Breunig and think shes one of the absolute worst and most annoying people in that sphere of twitter. i was more referring to her husband Matt though who can articulate more than just abstractions. the only entertaining thing about Liz is how utterly obsessed Aimee is with harassing with

that f***ing book he put out had me rolling just at the title lmao
And yeah Matt is actually solid with his stuff, i've read most of his policy papers. with liz she'll make a bad take and then just go back and say something like "i only use this for posting family stuff" whatever

I would say the pandemic had an effect on it too

On how insufferable they are or popularity (or both)?
On how insufferable they are or popularity (or both)?
Probably both but my point was more so about them being insufferable
Jimmy Dore is the most obvious example
