The two rappers I have listened to the most since 2020 (Ka and billy woods) have both spoken about these pressing issues so I can’t complain. The music is out there.

Honor killed the samurai is still one of the best albums I've ever had the fortune to listen to. I didn't even know it was possible to be that good of a poetic writer in rap while still sounding good

I have a collection of at least 80 great hip hop albums from 2020-2024. I’m not sure who y’all niggas are listening to but there have been a sea of amazing projects year in and year out this decade.

If yall chose to listen to only mainstream acts, that’s on you. But don’t blame Hip Hop, blame your poor taste. Yes you

This year has been good, but overall the top 5 rap albums of 2020-2025 wouldn't crack the top 20 rap albums/mixtapes of 2010-2019. 2010-2018 in particular saw hip hop reach another gear in terms of innovation that it isn't in right now.

Even if you want to play the angle that good music is out there and it’s on you if you only listen to mainstream stuff… isn’t that still a discussion worth having? OutKast was mainstream. Eminem was mainstream. Jay Z was mainstream. Kanye was mainstream. DMX was mainstream. Tupac was mainstream. If you’re saying that listening to only mainstream artists is the listeners fault if they want any kind of social commentary or intellectually stimulating content, then that’s still an indictment on the state of hip hop now vs then.

For sure trending towards the worst decade of hip hop

I ask my players or clients what they’re listening and they have to say “hang on”

And pull out their phone and read me who it is because they don’t know

genre got assimilated entirely into the wider american culture creating a distinct class of black petty bourgeois and bourgeois proper on top of developing its own media appendix that is entirely in agreement with larger american media machine

everyone is overly exposed to politics more than ever cause of social media. lots of people dont wanna hear politics again in music movies, sports etc

    THIS!!

  • I also hate write ups like this bc it doesn’t sound like u wanna even understand. Ur just attempting to slam dunk on an entire generation’s musical identity bc you’re uninformed.

No actually it’s really good! Being able to listen to a wide huge variety of music, a luxury only accessible to those of higher class before, and expand your palette and explore your love for it as much as possible unaffected by money is good. Casual listeners will always exist, as will music nerds. Both have the access they need for what they like

ok so what that’s always been the case? cool if they wanna own their copy of the music they can do that, it’s better than just the ability to explore music being gatekept by money and time. You shouldn’t need a certain amount of money to enjoy music.

    art should require some sacrifice

also spending money and sitting with albums is cheaper than streaming prices on average id bet. it is for me

I mean most of what you listed has absolutely nothing to do with hip hop
