This year has been good, but overall the top 5 rap albums of 2020-2025 wouldn't crack the top 20 rap albums/mixtapes of 2010-2019. 2010-2018 in particular saw hip hop reach another gear in terms of innovation that it isn't in right now.

Even if you want to play the angle that good music is out there and it’s on you if you only listen to mainstream stuff… isn’t that still a discussion worth having? OutKast was mainstream. Eminem was mainstream. Jay Z was mainstream. Kanye was mainstream. DMX was mainstream. Tupac was mainstream. If you’re saying that listening to only mainstream artists is the listeners fault if they want any kind of social commentary or intellectually stimulating content, then that’s still an indictment on the state of hip hop now vs then.

Being able to listen to a wide huge variety of music, a luxury only accessible to those of higher class before, and expand your palette and explore your love for it as much as possible unaffected by money is good. Casual listeners will always exist, as will music nerds. Both have the access they need for what they like
