Y'all know what time it is, year-end list season is starting up. Figured this could be a place to post and discuss all those from the major publications.
Always interesting to see who places where, revisit some projects, discover some new ones, let the publication know how trash they are…post your thoughts and feelings. MUSIC!
Side note, I'll be posting all the links in the OP, but probably just keep the list of the most recently discussed in OP to keep s*** as clean as possible.

3. ‘Not Like Us’ – Kendrick Lamar
4. ‘Bodyguard’ – Beyoncé
5. ‘Free Treasure’ – Adrianne Lenker
6. ‘Alone’ – The Cure
7. ‘Angel of my Dreams’ – JADE
8. ‘Bed Chem’ – Sabrina Carpenter
9. ‘Starburster’ – Fontaines DC
10. ‘Lone Star Lake’ – Waxahatchee

15. ‘Joy’ – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
16. ‘Aquamarine’ – Addison Rae

19. ‘Who Knows What You’ll Find?’ – Confidence Man
20. ‘How Did It End?’ – Taylor Swift
The Independent's top 20 songs is a solid list for me.
The JADE single is one of my favorite pop songs of the year, very impressive for a debut after leaving her girl group. "S P E Y S I D E" saw Bon Iver return in the most beautiful fashion. Rachel Chinouriri and "Never Need Me" caught a little viral moment earlier this year, but that should've been an even bigger moment for her and I hope to see her pop up on more of these lists. "Sexy to Someone" is just a really sweet, catchy tune from Clairo. It's interesting they put "Bed Chem" instead of one of Sabrina Carpenter's hit singles, but it's my favorite track on the album so I'm good with it. "Starburned and Unkissed" and "Starbuster" - both darker, more adventurous records that bang every listen. Addison Rae "Aquamarine" supremacy.
Then you get to the top 5. "Free Treasure" is one of the better songs on the Lenker album, stunning. I never expect not to see her on these lists. "BODYGUARD" is absolutely one of the best records of the year. So sexy and groovy and FUN. "Not Like Us", duh. It completely overtook the year and should probably be at the top of any lists that recognize mainstream music. The only hip-hop song on here too though, sadly. I also expect to see "Good Luck, Babe!" a ton, rightfully so. And "Girl, so confusing featuring lorde" is a moment that the music world is still recovering from. I won't argue about it at #1.
How did it end is an interesting pick good song
Just listened to that again, I think I only played the Anthology version of TTPD like twice so didn't remember it. I know people grow tired of how hyper-personal her music is, but I think it's pretty admirable how vividly she writes her life/her romances and heartbreaks particularly. She tells it all in her songs
any list without The Kill by Maggie Rogers is invalid
A highlight for me on her latest album, which is probably my favorite of hers

it's a lil bit surprising to me that the industry doesn't embrace her more. seems like the momentum she had pre-COVID is gone (after releasing back to back great albums)

I was thinking the same but held back cause I'm not really too sure what she's up to. She could still be doing a bunch of shows and have a lot of engagement. But yeah, at the very least, seems like there's less money behind her now. Which is interesting cause I just looked at Capitol's current roster and it doesn't look like there are many priorities left over there besides Katy Perry, Ice Spice, maybe Sam Smith...
S***, I might go back to Don't Forget Me this week now that you bring it up. Lol

dont forget her!! she also dropped a single a month or two ago that was pretty good.
her label is definitely failing her, one Grammy nomination to her name is criminal - how do you screw up on a pretty white girl making enjoyable pop music?
Checking out the 3 songs I haven't heard from The Independent's list - the Billie Marten track is an earworm, I could keep it on a loop. It doesn't seem as significant as some of the other tracks here though, and it only dropped a month ago. Never heard of Robby Hecht but that song sounded good too. The Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds pick is a real stunner, though. "We've all had too much sorrow, now is the time for joy"

I'm gonna go back and read the excerpts for each pick later, but off first look: I've listened to 14 out of 20 of these (Misty is out Friday, looking forward to it). Fabiana Palladino's self-titled? Yes yes yes. That album hasn't left me all year. Cutouts being the pick for The Smile over Wall of Eyes, mmmm. That Clairo album has been getting a lotttt of love and that'll be reflected on plenty of these lists I'm sure.

Ok, out of this list I haven't played:
IDLES - TANGK
Amyl and The Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness
Father John Misty - Mahashmashana
Big Special - Postindustrial Hometown Blues
Ezra Collective - Dance No One's Watching
Katy J Pearson - Someday, Now
FJM I'll be listening to when it drops Friday. I don't listen to IDLES, haven't heard of Big Special. Other than that, Amyl and The Sniffers was on my radar. I haven't listened to their stuff before, but they caught my attention with the U Should Not Be Doing That single. I'll check the album out at some point, gotta be in that type of mood.
EDIT: Days later, my dumb ass realizes it's a top 100. Lol I've updated the list with the rest
Damn at this glowing The Last Dinner Party writeup. I felt like there was a pretty big hype train before and right around the album's release, but can't tell if it's really sustained or not. There was a lot going on in indie rock this year though, easy to get lost in the shuffle. I did think the album was solid.
The Rock Beast must feed - but will it be ready for The Last Dinner Party? Coming on with anthem after anthem (Nothing Matters, Sinner and My Lady of Mercy all left a mark like a duelling scar), and channelling Queen and Kate Bush into something headline worthy from the get go, we've not seen a band so ready to take on stadiums since, ooh I don't know - Muse? Ultimately, you'll have an opinion on them by now - one of the marks of a generational band is that they split opinion. And that seems to be what they are, and wherever they go from here it's likely to be a spectacle.
No love for Vampire Weekend? Damn
I'm sure it'll be popping up, maybe just not as much.
In Rough Trade's case, only 4 out of 20 acts are American. So they likely just highlight more folks from their side of the world.
Not a huge Vampire Weekend fan myself but it's one of their better albums IMO, and I really enjoyed "Classical"
Waxahatchee sweep!
